Gems get to quarter finals after downing Argentina

A DOMINANT display saw the Australian Gems advance to the quarter finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina by a whopping 49 points at Starez Arena Vodova, Czechia (CZE) overnight.

The Gems came into the clash with two wins from two clashes to start the tournament, looking like one of the bigger contenders heading towards the pointy end of the group stages. Last night’s clash was their final match in this stage, and finishing with a perfect record would be huge for their chances at getting a favourable matchup and going deep into the tournament.

The Aussies led from start to finish, getting off to a flying start and building their lead from their, cruising home to a massive triumph and heading into the quarter finals with plenty of momentum.

It was the perfect start for the Australians, who posted the first seven points of the match in what proved to be a sign of things to come. The Gems were finding the bottom of the net from all three levels, and led by double-digits seven minutes into the match. At the end of the opening frame, Australia held a 16-point buffer and had complete control of the contest.

Although Argentina produced a better performance in the second quarter, it could not slow down the offensive production of the Australians, as the Gems pushed the margin out further. The long-range shooting of the Aussies was proving a massive factor in the match, and at the main change, they had stretched the margin out to 23 points.

After the Argentinians managed to muster up back to back baskets to start the second half, the Aussies splashed home a trio of triples to take back control of the contest. The Gems were simply unstoppable on the offensive end, with plenty of players getting involved. At the end of three quarters, Australia held a whopping 35-point buffer, with the game already over by this point.

Although the Aussies had the result sewn up with a quarter to play, they had no plans of slowing down, continuing to push the lead out even further for one of the biggest wins of the tournament. The Gems were firing on all cylinders and all players were getting involved on the scoring front, and by the time the match ended, the margin stood at an astounding 49 points.

It was a masterfully balanced performance from Australia, with five players pouring in double-digits in the points column. Madison Ryan and Sitaya Fagan led the way with 14 points apiece, while Zara Russell (12 points), Monique Bobongie (11 points) and Prasayus Notoa (11 points) were all tremendous in their own right.

For Argentina, Isabella Ingenito was the standout on the offensive end, fighting against the flow to keep her side’s score ticking over. She finished the contest with a team-high 11 points on 4/10 shooting from the field to be the only Argentinian player to hit double digits on the scoring front.

The Aussies will now turn their attention to the quarter finals, where they will take on Hungary on Friday night, who currently boast a record of two wins and one loss, although it achieved this feat in a tough group that contained the United States.
