FOLLOWING a strong start to his career in the National Basketball League (NBL), Australian guard Owen Foxwell will be heading overseas to join the Louisiana State University Tigers in the NCAA next season.
Foxwell is just about to wrap up his fifth season in the NBL, and is coming off a career-best campaign with the SEM Phoenix, averaging 11.1 points, three rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and finishing third in the NBL Next Generation Award.
Having cemented his place in the Phoenix’s starting lineup, the 22-year-old has established himself as a reliable guard next to veteran Nathan Sobey, and the pair have played a crucial role in getting the team into the postseason in third position, where they will be competitive for the championship.
However, the Phoenix will be without his services moving forward, as he has joined the Tigers as a member of the class of 2026. Having been long-touted as a potential college player following a strong junior career, that dream will be realised next season, when he gets his chance to shine in the NCAA competition.
He follows in the footsteps of Ben Simmons as an Australian joining the Tigers for his collegiate career, while Duop Reath and Max McKinnon both suited up for LSU in recent years too. Simmons in particular forged a strong career with the Tigers during his time with the team, and was taken with the first overall selection in his draft year.
Although Foxwell is not as highly regarded as Simmons coming into the program, he has the perfect opportunity to impress in the backcourt, and he has already shown that he can make an impact in a professional environment.
He joins brother Joel in the collegiate system, with the younger of the pair currently suiting up for the Portland Pilots in the NCAA, while the youngest sibling Austin has also shown plenty of promise in his junior career, showing that the Foxwell family has plenty of basketball pedigree.
Owen is also not the only Aussie to join the Tigers for the upcoming season, with Melbourne native Marcus Vaughns signing onto LSU in recent months as well. The six-foot-eight wing is in a different boat however, having joined the team in December and training with the Tigers since, although he was ruled out of making a midseason debut, and will instead suit up for the first time during the 2026/27 fixture.
