ONE OF the most exciting guards in the National Basketball League (NBL) will be joining the G League for the remainder of the 2026 season, with Illawarra Hawks gun William ‘Davo’ Hickey joining the South Bay Lakers late last week.
Hickey has been one of the strongest performers for the Hawks over the past couple of years, having established himself as a star of the NBL and playing a crucial role in getting the Hawks to the 2024/25 championship last year.
Although he missed the start of the season through injury, Hickey was still able to make an impact when he returned to the fold. Despite an extremely disappointing start to the fixture from a team perspective, the point guard made the team much more dangerous on the offensive end, proving a serious weapon as the Hawks tried to make a run into the finals.
Throughout the 2025/26 NBL season, Hickey posted career-best numbers to continue his ascent to stardom, dropping 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and a block per game, doing a bit of everything for the Hawks on a nightly basis. He was consistently orchestrating the offence for the Hawks, and managed to give the team a bit of life after a slow start.
Now, he is one step closer to achieving his dream of making the NBA, joining a team in the G League, which has proven a successful path to the top level in the past. He has had ties to the NBA throughout his 122-game NBL career, and will now get the chance to show that he is worthy of a spot in the world’s premier competition.
He will be joining a South Bay Lakers team that is one of the heavyweight contenders for the championship this season, currently holding a record of 22 wins and nine losses, which is good enough for second in the western conference.
On the Lakers’ current roster is Bronny James, son of NBA all-time great LeBron, which puts plenty of spotlight on each South Bay game. If Hickey can use this to his advantage and make an impression with his playing time, it could impress NBA scouts and further his career.
There is no doubting that Hickey has the talent to succeed in the G League, and playing for a contending Lakers side should mean he gets every chance to showcase his talents and potentially reach the top level.
