ABSC Day Three Wrap – Petrie posts triple double
A MAMMOTH triple-double from one of Australia’s best young female basketballers headlined the action from day three of the Australian Basketball Schools Competition on the Gold Coast.
Wednesday saw another batch of games as some of the best and brightest young players donned their school colours and hit the courts over the course of the day.
After an eye-catching performance earlier in the week, Jessica Petrie produced a dominant performance in Lake Ginninderra’s thumping 43-point triumph over St Luke’s Grammar.
She finished the match with a massive statline of 28 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists, recording her first triple-double of the tournament, although many appear to be on the horizon with a promising career inbound.
The daughter of former NBL forward Anthony, Petrie has been starring for the Centre of Excellence, which is one of the most proven pathways to professional basketball for young athletes. After posting over 20 points earlier in the tournament, she delivered her most complete showing, and has been one of the best performers.
She had recorded a double-double by halftime, and by the end of the third quarter, had posted double-digits in points, rebounds and assists.
Also impressing in that match was fellow Centre of Excellence member Isla Juffermans, who had a game-high 30 points to go with 10 rebounds in her side’s win.
In the men’s competition, promising forward Roman Siulepa produced another strong performance, posting a statline of 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as he continues to make a name for himself at just 15 years of age for Brisbane State High School.
Siulepa was one of a big three that fired for Brisbane in the win over Trinity College, with Elijah Kamu (20 points and eight rebounds) and Mason Amos (23 points and four rebounds) also posting big numbers.
Brisbane State will be now looking to take down powerhouse school Rowville in a blockbuster semi-final in a bid to make the men’s championship game.
Both sides have fired so far in the tournament, and it should prove to be one of the most exciting matchups of the fixture.
With the semis set to kick off today, there will be plenty more action to come from the Gold Coast, with plenty of names shining through so far throughout the competition.
