IN HIS first season in the G League, Denver Nuggets two way guard Trey Alexander was excellent for the Grand Rapids Gold, winning the competition’s Rookie of the Year award and giving the NBA affiliate plenty of hope moving forward.
The 22-year-old went undrafted at the 2024 intake 11 months ago, but signed on to join the recent NBA Champions on a two-way deal, having impressed during his stint with Creighton in the NCAA, being named to the All-Freshman First Team.
He caught the eye when playing with the Nuggets in the Summer League, which often gives players a second chance to impress against other young players, and worked a treat for Alexander, who showed his scoring capabilities in emphatic fashion.
After joining Denver, he was assigned to the G League, as the Nuggets looked to develop his game while still in contention for a championship themselves. The second-tier competition has proved excellent in generating and reviving careers, and Alexander was given the opportunity to shine in the backcourt.
The young gun made an immediate impact for the Gold, becoming a staple of the team’s offensive structure and the most reliable avenue to scoring. He was confident in his ability to score at all three levels, and it reflected in some big performances.
As the season rolled on, Alexander became much more impactful, and was even named G League Player of the Week for his efforts from January 13 to January 19th, a remarkable feat for a player in their first season. During that stretch, he averaged 34 points, 2.5 rebounds, five assists and 4.5 made triples per game, while shooting 50 per cent from behind the arc.
During that stretch, he posted three consecutive matches of 30-plus points, showing his ceiling and making his mark amongst the best scorers in the competition. When given responsibility on the offensive end, Alexander showed he was certainly capable of leading a team on the offensive end.
He was also able to make short appearances with the Nuggets at NBA level, after the team was impressed with his efforts in the G League. On the season in at the top level, he averaged 1.3 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game in 4.9 minutes per game across 24 appearances.
He was named the best rookie in the G League for his efforts as well as obviously being named to the G League All-Rookie First Team after an excellent campaign. He was by far the most exciting first year player in the competition, and played with the skill and production of an experienced campaigner.
On the season, Alexander posted averaged of 26.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 blocks per game on 46.2 per cent shooting from the field, 42.2 per cent from three-point territory and 80.2 per cent from the charity stripe in a masterful debut season that is sure to increase his opportunities at NBA level.
