ONE of the National Basketball League (NBL)’s most well known big men over the past few years has returned to the competition in a big addition to the league’s frontcourts.
Having starred as a member of the Adelaide 36ers over the past few years, veteran centre Daniel Johnson has signed as an injury replacement player for the SEM Phoenix, looking to prove himself and earn a permanent spot on a list for the remainder of the season.
Phoenix Centre Gorjok Gak will miss the next two games at least, after sustaining an injury to his calf against the Brisbane Bullets on Thursday night. His presence was missed in the team’s match against the Cairns Taipans, encouraging the team to look externally to temporarily fill his role.
Luckily, South East Melbourne recruited a player who brings a plethora of experience, including over 400 games in the NBL. He has since had his number 21 jersey retired by the 36ers, whom he will likely face in the coming fixture.
At his peak, Johnson was arguably the best big man in the NBL, able to score from inside and behind the three-point line, while consistently causing problems for the other team with his ability to get first hands and pulling down a rebound.
He was named to the All-NBL First Team three times, the All-NBL Second Team three times and the All-NBL Third Team once, showcasing how consistent of a force he is. Now at 35 years of age, it seems far fetched that he will be able to reach such heights once again. However, his veteran leadership and basketball IQ will be at the forefront as he looks to contribute in any way he can.
South East Melbourne Phoenix coach Mike Kelly appeared excited to add a quality player to their list on such short notice.
“It’s great that we are able to add a person and player of the calibre of Daniel Johnson to our roster who is ready to go and will no doubt contribute from the start,” Kelly said.
“We’re looking forward to having Gorjok back when he’s ready, but having Daniel in the rotation will be really beneficial in the interim.”
Phoenix fans will get their first look at Johnson when the team takes on Melbourne United in another installment of the throwdown at John Cain Arena on Sunday afternoon.
