Aussies complete clean sweep at qualifiers

THE AUSTRALIAN Boomers have finished the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers with a perfect record after closing out the tournament with a 50-point thumping of Thailand at Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Fresh off a big win over Indonesia, the Boomers were looking to close out the FIBA window in style, gearing up when the official tournament begins in Saudi Arabia later this year.

The Aussies did as expected and delivered yet another dominant display on their home shores to claim a big win and head into the tournament as favourites. With plenty of stars expected to join the roster for the Asia Cup, there is not much going against the Boomers.

Australian Boomers (114) def. Thailand (64)

The Boomers started the game on an 11-3 run, with Perth Wildcats guard Elijah Pepper leading the way with some early baskets. The visitors bounced back with some quick offence, but the Aussies had yet another big run (9-0) to lead 26-18 at the first change, looking back to their best and in control of the match.

Although the Boomers were struggling to hit from range (2/13 3PT in the first half), they were simply too good inside for their opponents. Quick ball movement often put Thailand on the back foot, unable to rotate fast enough and get over to truly contest the shot. After two quarters of play, Australia’s lead was pushed out to 21 points with the hosts in the box seat to cruise home for the remainder of the match.

It was Pepper again who helped the Aussies out to a red-hot start in the second half, with the guard posting six points in seemingly no time at all, as Thailand’s deficit ballooned out even further. At the final change, the Boomers had a 28-point buffer in hand and the win secured.

Although the Boomers could have taken the foot off the accelerator in the final period, the fourth quarter was actually their best, outscoring the opposition 33-11 to set up the 50-point win, furthering their dominance throughout the tournament Qualifiers.

Although it was not Australia’s best shooting performance, the Boomers were well-aided by their dominance inside, winning the points in the paint count 80-16 in a whopping disparity. Thailand simply lacked the interior defence to contain the Aussies and the hosts were able to feast on scoring at the basket.

Pepper led the way for the Boomers with 24 points on 11/19 shooting from the field to go with five rebounds and five assists in a standout showing from the emerging guard. He paired well in the backcourt with Isaac White, who had 22 points and seven dimes in a productive display.

The win sees the Aussies finish the qualifying stage with a record of six wins from six games, and will head into August’s Asia Cup with plenty of wind in their sails.
