Aussies in the WNBA – Magbegor making her mark

FOLLOWING a dominant bronze medal performance with the Australian Opals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Eziyoda Magbegor is having a big impact in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) of late.

The WNBA is the pinnacle of female basketball, and brings together the best players in the world, making for some high-quality action.

Magbegor has been suiting up for the Seattle Storm for the 2024 season, and has been putting together a second exceptional campaign. After being selected as an All-Star last year, the 25-year-old has backed it up and is a key cog in the front court for the Storm, repaying the faith after they drafted her in 2019.

A double-double threat whenever she is on the court, Magbegor has been working hard on both ends of the floor to become one of the most consistent players on the roster for Seattle.

Most recently, the talented tall was able to lead her side to victory over the Washington Mystics, 83-77. Magbegor stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points and 14 rebounds on 4/9 shooting from the field. She ran the floor excellently in transition, and often pulled down the rebound, dished the ball to a teammate and got the ball back after storming down the court for an easy lay-up.

The game prior, Magbegor delivered a tremendous defensive display, recording five blocks in the loss to Indiana. She made scoring inside a difficult task for opposition players, using her long wingspan to swat a handful of attempted shots, and frequently started transition scoring plays for the Storm.

So far throughout the 2024 season, Magbegor is averaging 12.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.4 blocks, and is enjoying a stellar campaign.

Also catching the eye of late has been fellow frontcourt gun and strong Olympic performer Alanna Smith, who has been doing her thing with the Minnesota Lynx. Despite a quiet start to the fixture, Smith has found form on the scoring front of late.

She has poured in 10-plus points in four of her last five outings, including a season-high 18 points on 6/15 shooting from the field in the loss to Indiana. Her most impressive performance came against the Atlanta Dream, doing a bit of everything to post 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead her side to victory with an excellent all-around display.

Both players have been in tremendous form of late, and are right at home playing in the top basketball competition in the world.
