Aussies set to face off against contenders

THE 2023 FIBA World Cup is set to take place later this year, and over the past few days, the seeding for the tournament was revealed.

The format of the competition sees 32 teams qualified to compete at the World Cup, including the two host nations in the Philippines and Japan. The teams were placed into eight pots, with two group stages and the finals set to be played out.

Pots one, three, five and seven will make up groups B,D,F and H, while the even numbered pots will make up groups A,C,E and G. This allows the best sides to potentially play each other later in the tournament and delivers fairness to all teams.

The eight groups for the 2023 World Cup were based on the most recent FIBA Men’s World Ranking, which was updated after the conclusion of the World Cup qualifiers. The Philippines were placed in the first group as host country, while the rest were based on rankings, with the highest ranked team placed in the first group, while the lowest was placed into the eighth group.

The Australian Boomers were placed in the first group given their strong ranking and good form in the qualifiers. The Aussies currently sit third in the world as a basketball side, and will now face off against some of the strongest sides in the tournament.

The Philippines are the outlier in a strong first group, and sit 40th in the world rankings as it stands. The rest of the group is made up of the United States and Spain, two staples of modern basketball success. Much will be made of the roster the US brings to the tournament, but should still remain an extremely dangerous threat when it comes to gold medal aspirations. Spain are also a tough task for any of its opponents, playing a winning style of basketball every tournament and will be one of the favourites to win it all.

The Boomers will be looking to load up with some young talent for the upcoming tournament, with young superstar Josh Giddey already confirming that he will be suiting up for the Aussies in 2023. It is a huge coup for Australia, with Giddey taking his already strong game to another level in the 2023 NBA playoffs.

Also likely to join the team are Dyson Daniels and Josh Green, with the Aussie pair also making a name for themselves in the NBA over the past few months. With the likes of Patrick Mills and Joe Ingles reaching the twilight of their careers, the next generation of Aussies has come at the perfect time.
