Battle of the unbeaten kicks off round
THE Big V Men’s competition is only in Round 3, and already we have a massive clash on the cards. Two of the competition’s three undefeated sides will go head-to-head to kick off proceedings this weekend. With the standings at a crucial stage, it is a massive game in the context of the season, and is set to separate the contenders from the hopefuls.
McKinnon vs Wyndham
Saturday, April 2 @7pm
GESAC
In the biggest clash we have seen this year, Wyndham will travel to GESAC to take on McKinnon on Saturday night, in what should be some cracking basketball. Both sides are yet to drop a game, and will be eager to carry this forward. However, there can only be one side standing at the end of the contest, so expect the two squads to leave nothing in the tank. It has already been a ripping start to the 2022 season, with a number of entertaining games across the first two rounds of play. There have been none more important than a top-three battle though, and the outcome should change the landscape of the competition moving forward.
McKinnon has been terrific to start season 2022, with three wins coming from three outings. The most recent of which was extremely convincing, as they dominated Chelsea for all four quarters to take home a whopping 27-point win at home. It was a statement victory as the winning side announced themselves as one to beat this year. They will come up against a tough opponent in Round 3, but will take plenty of confidence in from previous results. It appears McKinnon has found a winning style of play for its current campaign, but it will be tested against Wyndham on Saturday night. One of the things that makes them so dangerous is their balanced scoring output, and it was on full display in the triumph over Chelsea. They had four players rack up 15+ points and two over 20 in the end, which demonstrates they won’t be relying on one player to get them to a winning score on the weekend.
Wyndham currently sits atop the standings based on percentage, but also thanks to a trio of wins to start its 2022 campaign. Two of their victories have come with margins over 35 points, so it is safe to say they have done it in a convincing manner. They look extremely tough to stop of late, but will face a true test of character on Saturday night, when they face another side with similar championship aspirations. However, Wyndham’s ability to simply outwork and outplay the opposition is second to none in any basketball competition, so they should enter the match as slight favourites. The fact that they posted 118 points in their last win alone says a lot about the dominance of their offence, led by Maurice Howard, who had 40 of his own. There are a number of players who could explode on any given night, so it should be a cracking battle on Saturday.
Along with the match above, there is still plenty more basketball for fans to enjoy around Victoria, with the following matches on the cards for this weekend.
