Blues blast Cougars in emphatic road win

IT WAS another commanding performance from the Frankston Blues in Round 12 of the 2025 Big V Youth Championship Men’s season over the weekend, handing the Keysborough Cougars a 44-point loss in dominant fashion.

The Blues have been one of the best teams in the competition over the past 11 rounds of the fixture, trailing just the Kilsyth Cobras in the standings and coming into the clash at Rowville Secondary College with a 14-2 record.

It was going to take Keysborough’s best despite holding home court advantage, but the Cougars were no match for the Blues, who looked in control for the entirety of the match and cruised home to a massive victory.

The first quarter was reflective of how the match was going to pan out, with the Blues jumping out to a double-digit lead in just five minutes of play. Frankston was doing as it pleased on the offensive end, finding plenty of avenues to the basket, while also holding the Cougars to just six points to take a 17-point buffer into quarter time.

It was a much improved effort from the home side in the second frame, looking much more productive on the offensive end with some better ball movement and composure scoring inside. Unfortunately, the Cougars simply could not stop the Blues from keeping their score ticking over, and still trailed by 23 points at the main break.

The third quarter was eerily similar to the first, with traffic all heading one way as the Blues continued to push their lead out further. Keysborough managed just seven points for the quarter and with the visitors leading by 45 points at the final change, the game was well and truly over by this point.

The Cougars fought hard to try and make the margin more respectable in the fourth quarter, and even won the term 15-14 in their best period of the match. The damage was already done however, with Frankston cruising home to a seriously comfortable win.

It was a remarkably balanced team showing from the Blues, with all 12 players that saw court time registering a score in an astounding performance as a unit. Despite dropping 95 points for the game, Jesse Lans was the leading scorer with 13 points, while Lachlan Kanngiesser and Maddox Parsons both dropped 12 points to be the sole double-digit scorers for the match, such was the balance of their offence.

For the Cougars, captain Nate Raymond and Jacob Oryem poured in 12 points apiece to try and keep their side in the hunt in the first half, while Arop Matiok was also impressive with 11 points and six rebounds of his own.
