Boomers and Flyers to renew rivalry in Round 2
AFTER an enthralling first weekend of WNBL action, there’s plenty more action coming up this weekend.
One match of Round 2 has already taken place, with the Bendigo Spirit ending their winless streak after 676 days as the beat the Melbourne Boomers on Wednesday night.
There will only be two of the Round Two matches taking place this weekend. The third match between the UC Capitals and the Sydney Uni Flames has been cancelled after a positive COVID-19 case in the Capitals camp.
Adelaide Lightning vs Townsville Fire
Saturday at 4:30pm
The Lights Community and Sports Centre
This will be the first match for both of these sides this season, so both sets of fans will be keen to finally see their teams out on the court.
Adelaide will be looking to take the step up and make the playoffs this season, while Townsville will be keen to avenge the heartbreak of last year’s Grand Final loss.
These two sides played each other once last season. In that encounter it was the Fire who got the win 95–66.
Adelaide have been busy in the off season, so fans will be keen to see how the likes of Kiana Williams and Kylee Shook go this season.
Townsville on the other hand will have to work out how to cover the loss of Shyla Heal and Megan McKay but do gain the likes of WNBA stars Monique Billings and Sug Sutton.
Melbourne Boomers vs Southside Flyers
Saturday at 7:30pm
Melbourne Sports Centres – Parkville
Both of these sides have had a match already this season, with both sides having vastly different starts to the season. The Boomers will be looking to bounce back after losing to the Bendigo Spirit first up, while the Flyers had a dominant win over the Spirit last weekend.
Sara Blicavs (27 points), Rebecca Cole (24) and Abby Bishop (20) all put up big numbers in their Round 1 win for the Fylers. Meanwhile Cayla George was phenomenal with 16 points and 19 rebounds, with Ezi Magbegor working back into it with seven. Both Blicavs and Bishop also had 11 rebounds, whilst Maddison Rocci was a perfect distributor with eight assists and five rebounds.
When the two sides played each other last season, it was the Flyers who got the win 94–79. The Boomers will certainly be hoping history does not repeat itself this weekend.
