Boomers looking to chase top spot ahead of massive matchup
THE Bulleen Boomers have the opportunity to take top spot in the Big V Women’s competition on the weekend, providing they emerge victorious in their clash against the Sunbury Jets at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night.
It is one of the most important clashes of the year for both sides, with each club looking to move up on the ladder as finals approach at a rapid pace.
While the top four is all but sealed to this point in the season, these teams will be looking to set themselves up to be in the best possible position come finals time, and Saturday’s game will be a big step in the right direction.
With both clubs in ripping form of late (particularly Sunbury), this game is set to be the match of the round, with two genuine title contenders set to lock horns.
Sunbury Jets vs. Bulleen Boomers
Saturday, July 16 @ 6pm
Boardman Stadium
The Jets have been one of the form sides of the competition over the last month, taking down the best sides the league has to offer. They have been on an absolute roll in their past five games, taking down all the other sides in the top five of the competition, and look a strong chance of carrying this momentum into finals. These two teams went head to head in Round 12, and the Jets proved too strong as they claimed an eight-point triumph. Obviously the Boomers will be more prepared this time around, but Sunbury has shown it can defeat any side on any given day. With an extremely talented roster, the Jets should come into Saturday’s game confident of their ability to take down the opposition. Star Jet Maria Steen Jespersen will likely cop more defensive attention this time around, given she dominated a few weeks ago. However, she has been on one hell of a tear, and current form might prove too much for the Bulleen defence.
The Boomers have set themselves up for a nice finish to the season, with a record of 14 wins and three losses good enough for second spot on the ladder, trailing Wyndham by just a single win. Saturday presents the opportunity to potentially move up, if the ladder-leaders are upset by Pakenham earlier in the day. Bulleen would be a worthy recipient of top spot, but face the most in-form team in the Big V Women’s. As mentioned above, the Boomers were on the end of a surprising loss last time out, and will be seeking revenge on the road. A lot of the game will come down to restricting Jespersen on the defensive end, and getting the ball in the hands of Olivia Bontempelli, who has been their most consistent player throughout the season. If they can carry in their form from last weekend (which saw an 18-point triumph over Chelsea), they might just be able to flip the script and put Sunbury’s dream run to a halt.
