Boomers roster confirmed for New Zealand clash
THE AUSTRALIAN Boomers have announced the squad of players that will be donning the green and gold for their clash with the New Zealand Tall Blacks in the first window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.
The Tasman rivals will lock horns in two clashes, the first of which will take place in Hobart in late November, before heading over to Wellington for the second game in early December as the two sides fight for qualification at the World Cup next year.
The Boomers will be bringing the core of the roster that won the recent Asia Cup, while also adding some veteran players to try and slot into the lineup without disrupting the chemistry of a team that brought home the gold recently.
In exciting news, NBA Draft prospect Dash Daniels has been named in the backcourt for the Aussies, continuing the development of the 17-year-old, who has been impressing for Melbourne United throughout the NBL season to date, and will certainly benefit from more exposure at international level.
Another exciting return will be Jaylin Galloway, who was named tournament MVP at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, and is fresh off a season-best performance with the Sydney Kings in the NBL. He was unstoppable last time he was in a Boomers jersey, and the team will be hopeful of getting similar production from him against the Tall Blacks.
Joining him will be Alex Ducas, who has added an NBA Championship to his name since he last donned the green and gold for Australia, while in-form Tasmania JackJumpers forward Josh Bannan will also suit up for the Boomers following some big performances over the first month of the NBL season.
The team will be coached by Dean Vickerman, with usual head coach Adam Caporn set to be fulfilling his duties with the Washington Wizards in the NBA. Vickerman is more than a handy replacement, having found success both at NBL and international level in the past.
“We’ve got different dynamics compared to the Asia Cup for these windows as all players will be in-season, so selections will be based on a combination of health as well as form,” Vickerman said.
“We have a lot of respect for our opponents (Tall Blacks) and we will need to find the right selection mix of prime players and rising stars.”
The first clash will take place at MyState Bank Arena on November 29.
