A SHOOTING guard who brings plenty of professional experience to the table, Izaiah Brockington has joined the New Zealand Breakers for the 2025/26 NBL season as an import, and should be a key member of their roster.
Brockington has NCAA, G League and Summer League experience, and also recently played professional basketball in Canada, where he lined up alongside NBL great Mitch Creek for the Vancouver Bandits and showed how dangerous he can be at the two-guard spot.
During his time with the Bandits, the 26-year-old averaged 10 points and three rebounds per game in a solid display on the scoring front, and should be a complimentary piece to the players already on the roster for the Breakers.
Bringing professional experience is certainly a positive, although his basketball journey has proved difficult at times. After a strong senior campaign with the Iowa State Cyclones, Brockington declared for the 2022 NBA Draft, and looked a strong shot of being selected with his impressive skillset and eye-catching season.
However, he suffered an ACL injury in the pre-draft workouts, which derailed his draft chances and he was not selected as a result. Although the New Orleans Pelicans gave him a couple of short contracts and he did play a single game for the team, he spent most of his time with the Birmingham Squadron, with whom he completed two strong G League campaigns.
His best stint in the competition came with the San Diego Clippers last season, where the guard averaged an impressive 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.2 blocks per game, while shooting 44.9 per cent from the field, 35.4 per cent from three-point territory and 77.5 per cent from the charity stripe across 11 games.
He impressed enough to deserve a shot with the Clippers in the Summer League, although he was not given enough court time to truly make an impact, with his best performance coming against the Memphis Grizzlies, where he posted two points, two rebounds and two steals.
As a player, he has the most impact on the offensive end, showing a versatile offensive arsenal with the ability to score across all three levels. He is comfortable firing off shots from long range, having attempted six triples a game in the G League, while his eye-catching athleticism will undoubtedly result in some highlight plays in the NBL.
Brockington will slot into the lineup nicely next to point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who importantly re-signed over the offseason. The duo will form a damaging backcourt that is extremely capable of carrying New Zealand on the scoring front for the upcoming season.
“We are incredibly excited to have Izaiah join the BNZ Breakers,” Dillon Boucher, President of Basketball Operations said.
“His skill set, athleticism, and versatility will be a huge asset to our team.
“We believe he will make a significant dynamic impact on both ends of the floor, providing a crucial piece for the team.”
Fans will likely have their first look at Brockington when the Breakers take on the SEM Phoenix in their first NBL Blitz outing in late August.
