Broncos aim to bounce back ahead of big matchup

THE Hume Broncos face a fairly big task when they take on Wyndham in the Big V Men’s basketball competition at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Friday night in a big top-four clash.

Both sides have been among the better performers to date in season 2022, setting up a blockbuster matchup this weekend. The Broncos have been quite solid so far this year, winning just over half of their games, but will enter the game as underdogs given how strong the opposition has been with one of the best records in the competition.

The game is sure to have a fair say on the standings moving forward, given both sides are looking to stake their claim inside the top-four as the fixture edges towards conclusion. A loss to the Broncos could see them just one win ahead of Camberwell, who are hot on their tail. On the other hand, if Wyndham cannot get the job done, it will fall further behind the ladder-leading Sunbury, and could open itself up to falling further down the ladder.

The Broncos have managed to grab the final spot inside the top portion of the standings, with nine wins and seven losses next to their name after 16 outings. With a number of sides underperforming thus far, Hume has set itself up to secure a position in the postseason, but a loss on Saturday would make things very interesting. At their best, the Broncos are a high-scoring side, but have lacked the consistency to keep up with sides such as McKinnon and Wyndham. However, a big point of focus for the home side will be on the defensive end, as it brought them undone in the 20-point loss to McKinnon last round. They conceded a whopping 102 points, which is quite hard to match down the other end. If the Broncos are to get over the line, expect Chris Elder to be amongst the top points scorers as he has been so many times this season.

Wyndham has been terrific in the first 13 rounds of the season, losing just two out of its first 13 games. That record is good enough for second spot in the standings, just two wins behind the top of the table Jets. The visitors have found a terrific style of play that has brought some high scores, and that was evidenced last weekend. They took down Chelsea by 30 points and scored 110 points of their own, showing how dangerous they can truly by. Maurice Howard has been terrific on a weekly basis, and scored 25 points last round, so should play another vital role this weekend.
