Broncos looking to keep up with top-four

THE Hume Broncos will be keen on keeping in touch with the top-four when they take on one of its occupants in the Sunbury Jets in the Big V Women’s Basketball competition at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Jets currently occupy fourth spot on the ladder, three wins ahead of the Broncos, but Hume will be determined to not let a finals appearance slip out of its grasp. Both sides have shown strong patches of play throughout the season, and if we see more of that action on Saturday, this could be the match to watch for Round 14.

A win for the Broncos would see them end up just two wins outside of fourth come the end of the round, making things very interesting as the season edges towards conclusion. On the other hand, a loss would see Sunbury push further ahead, and make their task of a top-four finish much trickier with just four rounds to play.

The Broncos have been a bit below par so far in season 2022,. with six wins and nine losses next to their name to date. Their record is good enough for fifth spot in the standings, but the gap up to fourth is still at three wins, so there is plenty of work to do. To make matters worse, they are taking on a Sunbury side that is well and truly in form of late, so the Broncos will need to produce one of their defining performances of the year. They have the offensive power to post a winning score, but they will need to be seriously switched on defensively, with the opponent hosting a number of scoring weapons. If the Broncos can prevent these players from getting off the hook, they might be in with a real shot. With ball in hand, Briana Gray has been the threat all season, and will likely feature again here.

The Jets have been on a tear over the last couple of weeks, taking down both of the top two sides and asserting themselves as a genuine contender in the process. It has been a dominant patch for Sunbury, and it will be looking to keep that momentum rolling as the weeks go on. The visitors will be the favoured side coming in, and for good reason. If the likes of Maria Steen Jespersen and Ida Andersson can continue to fire, it will be all but decided early on.
