Brown gets buckets with scoring clinic

THE MICHIGAN WOLVERINES fell short of the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAAW earlier on Tuesday, but Wolverines shooter Leigha Brown was the most prominent offensive threat on the court.

The Buckeyes got off to a flying start in the first term of the match, and although the Wolverines clawed their way back into the game as the contest wore on, the deficit proved to be too much as Ohio State claimed a 13-point triumph at Crisler Center.

Although her side was unable to claim the win, Brown was the standout scorer of the match. No one came close to matching her points total, as the guard produced buckets at will, and gave it her all to try and drag her side to an unlikely victory. Although she was outweighed by the volume of contributors on the other team, Brown’s efforts were still impressive.

Ohio State Buckeyes (74) def. Michigan Wolverines (61)

Leigha Brown – 36 points, nine rebounds, three assists

Brown was the game’s leading scorer by a significant margin, putting the team’s offence on her back on plenty of possessions.

The fifth-year player racked up a whopping 36 points, clearly the most of any player on the court. Although some of her teammates suffered from a bout of inaccuracy, Brown stepped up and flexed her growth as an offensive player since joining the school.

She shot 11/21 from the field, with eight of those makes coming from inside the arc. Brown was not afraid to attack the opposition off the dribble, putting the defender on the back foot and driving to the rim with intent. Her mid-range and floater game were also in form, although it was not always her preferred method of scoring.

The guard also drained a trio of three-pointers from six attempts, making the most of her ability to create separation from the defender. Brown’s smooth jumpshot and wingspan makes it difficult for the opposition to contest the shot completely. Although there were some hands in her face on a number of attempts, it did not appear to faze the six-foot one-inch senior.

Brown’s aggressive nature when attacking the rim also resulted in her drawing plenty of contact on the drive. The defence was caught out of position when trying to thwart her attacks, and resorted to ill-discipline under the rim. She was perfect from the charity stripe, shooting 11 from 11 in a truly composed display.

Brown was the standout in her side’s tough loss to the lower-ranked Ohio State, and although the Wolverines could not get the desired result, the guard was terrific on the offensive end and gave her team a sniff at various stages of the match.
