CBL North East: Seymour Blasts its way into pole position for finals
IN the sole Country Basketball League (CBL) North East match on the weekend, Seymour Blasters secured top spot on the table courtesy of a dominant 79-59 victory over Wallan Panthers in the final round of the season. Their case was helped by Round 6 being cancelled following Victoria’s snap lockdown, leaving the Blasters unassailable on top of the table.
Whilst Seymour did have one less bye than the next four teams behind them on the table, they won all their five matches on the table to be four points clear of Myrtleford Saints. A mid-table logjam between a remarkable four teams – Benalla Breakers, Wodonga Wolves, Wangaratta Warriors and the Panthers – saw them all on 11 points, with Shepparton Gators last with 10.
In the 79-59 victory, Tyler Best dominated with 21 points, teaming up well with Jordan Hockley (17) and Robbie Sartori (12) who all hit double-figures for the Blasters. The Panthers also had their fair share of scorers, with Luke Liesegang top scoring with 14, ahead of Jordan Sullivan and Sebastian Villegas (both 11).
The regular season is now over, with Seymour Blasters hosting Wodonga Wolves in the first semi-final, and Myrtleford Saints taking on Benalla Breakers in the second semi-final. With no turning back and no second chances, the winners of those two semis will advance to the decider, held on Saturday March 6.
The women’s competition had a Round 7 bye, which meant the players have not hit the court since Round 5 in a quirky anomaly. In that league, the Wangaratta Warriors and Wallan Panthers both finished with a 3-1 record, and while the Panthers have the higher percentage (127.48 to 121.65), the Warriors won against the Panthers to inflict their only defeat and secure top spot. In third spot is Seymour Blasters with a 3-2 record, while Wodonga Lady Wolves and Myrtleford Saints both went at 50 per cent success from their four games, and Benalla Breakers hold up the ladder without a win from five matches.
The semi-finals take place this weekend, with Wangaratta Warriors hosting Wodonga Lady Wolves in the first semi-final, and Wallan Panthers locking horns with Seymour Blasters in the second semi-final.
