Clash of the contenders kicks off weekend
WITH the weekend having arrived, the Big V Women’s competition is set to kick off another batch of games. Round 8 will see five big games take place around Victoria, as the fixture begins to heat up. There are a number of storylines to keep an eye on, as the standings are set for another shake up as the halfway point of the season approaches at a rapid rate.
Arguably the biggest matchup will take place first up, when Wyndham and McKinnon go head-to-head at GESAC on Saturday evening. Both squads are looking strong in the quest for the 2022 title, and occupy two of the top three spots on the ladder. It is pretty evident that Bulleen are a class above at the moment, but how long that will last remains a valid question, and if the ladder leaders are to be dethroned, it will likely be one of these two teams. However, a win in Saturday’s game will prove vital, so expect not much to be left in the tank from either squad in what is shaping up to be a fantastic display.
McKinnon vs Wyndham
Saturday, May 14 @ 5pm
GESAC
McKinnon has been strong to start season 2022, with just three losses coming from eight games as they look to build a promising campaign. Their record sees them sit in third spot, but they face a formidable opponent in Round 8. Last weekend, they claimed a convincing win over a struggling Southern Peninsula side, which was a crucial game not to drop. However, the opposition will be a bit tougher on Saturday night, so they will need to bring their absolute A-game. There were four players that registered double-digits in the points column, including Katie Bluzer who led the way with 18 of her own, so expect plenty of contributors again here.
Wyndham has also been excellent in its start to the year, recording six wins from eight outings, maintaining a position near the top of the table. Currently occupying third spot on the ladder, the visitors have not done much wrong in the first seven rounds, and will be eager to keep the momentum rolling. However, McKinnon presents one if its toughest challenges yet, but Wyndham has proven to be a seriously dangerous offensive side, and that may prove too much for the opposition defensive strategies. Last round saw three players score 19 or more points, which demonstrates how powerful the visiting side can be with ball in hand.
