Flyers and Boomers to reignite rivalry

AFTER border closures and COVID-19 cases meant a lot of fixture changes, this weekend Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) fans will finally get a full weekend of basketball to enjoy.

Southside Flyers vs Melbourne Boomers
Saturday at 5pm
Dandenong Stadium

This is the second time these two sides have met this season, having met previously only a week ago. In that clash, it was the Melbourne Boomers who upset the reigning champions and got the win 91-72.

For the Flyers, Abby Bishop and Rebecca Cole will be the ones the Boomers will need to keep quiet in order to be in with a chance of winning. Both have been scoring well so far this season, with an average of 17.5 and 17 points per game respectively. Bishop has also registered an average of 11 rebounds a game so far this season.

For the Boomers, Tiffany Mitchell has been the main scorer so far this season with an average of 17 points per game so far this season. Cayla George has also been in good form so far this season, recording a whopping 14 rebounds a game so far this season.

Townsville Fire vs Sydney Uni Flames
Saturday at 6:30pm

Both sides are coming off vastly different opening matches. First up the Fire got the win over Adelaide, while the Flames lost to the UC Capitals.

These two sides have not played each other yet this season. Last time they played each other was last season, when Townsville got the win 73-59. The Flames are going to have several Fire players they are going to need to keep quiet in order to get the win. Lauren Nicholson shot 24 points last week, while Monique Billings and Zitina Aokuso registered 13 and 12 rebounds respectively.

UC Capitals vs Adelaide Lightning
Sunday at 4pm
National Convention Centre, Canberra

Both these sides are coming off vastly different opening matches of the season. First up the Capitals got a win over the Flames 58-55, while the Lightning lost to Townsville 70-59. These two sides played twice last season, with each side registering one win against each other. First time around Adelaide beat Canberra 85-73, while in the second clash Canberra got the win 85-65.

For the Lightning, Stephanie Talbot was a star first up. She shot 19 points and recorded 12 rebounds. For the Capitals, Brittney Sykes shot 16 points and had seven rebounds first up, while Kelsey Griffin shot 12 points and had 12 rebounds.

Bendigo Spirit vs Melbourne Boomers
Sunday at 7pm
Bendigo Stadium

For the second time this weekend, the Boomers come up against an opponent for the second time this season.

Last time around, the Spirit were finally able to break their 600-plus day winless run and beat the Boomers 63-58.

For the Spirit, Anneli Maley has been in ripping form in the early part of the season. She’s shot an average of 16.5 points a game and recorded an average of 13.5 total rebounds a game. The Boomers will certainly need to keep an eye on her if they want history to avoid repeating itself this weekend.
