Four sides remain as semi-finals tip-off
THE home and away fixture has wrapped for the Big V Men’s basketball competition, so it is time for the finals to kick off, with the league’s semi-finals series set to start this upcoming weekend.
There was so much to like about season 2022 for the Big V Men’s, with a number of sides delivering some high-octane action on a weekly basis. There were big scores and nail-biting wins, but in the end, only four teams could advance through to the postseason. It is set to be an enthralling finals series, with all four teams hosting the potential to win it all in the upcoming weeks.
The blockbuster matchup set to kick off the 2022 Big V finals series will see the Hume Broncos take on the Sunbury Jets, in a rivalry that has produced a number of entertaining clashes so far this year. The two teams will face off at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Saturday night in a do-or-die contest that will have plenty to keep fans enganged.
The Jets finished atop the standings at the conclusion of the regular season, taking home a record of 20 wins and just one loss in what was a dominant season. They looked a class above their peers for the majority of the fixture, and will be eager to carry that momentum forward as they look to claim the championship. When these two sides faced off last weekend, Sunbury just snuck home in the final quarter to claim a one-point lead, so this is no guaranteed win for the home side. Ishmael Sanders has been a staple of the team’s success throughout the season, and will be a main player again on Saturday night.
The Broncos managed to secure their spot inside the top four with a record of 11 wins and 10 losses. While this is not exactly convincing coming in against the best sides the competition has to offer, their most recent outing against their semi-final opponent was much more encouraging. They pushed the Jets to the limit and almost walked away with a big upset. The result will give Hume plenty of confidence, and if scoring machine Chris Elder can keep out of foul trouble this time around, they might just be able to get themselves over the line.
The second semi-final will see the second-placed Wyndham play host to the third-seeded McKinnon at GESAC on Saturday night, which is shaping up to be a thrilling affair.
Wyndham delivered a fantastic season, and if not for an unbelievable campaign from the Jets, would have been the team to beat coming into the finals series. With a number of scoring options on their list, the home side will be coming into the postseason with plenty of confidence in their ability to win it all. However, their semi-final opponents have been in similar form of late, so it will be no easy feat advancing to the big dance. Ball movement and transition defence will prove key in this contest, two areas that Wyndham has excelled in during season 2022. They posted a whopping 129 points in their final outing of the season, with Maurice Howard‘s 28 points leading the way, and a repeat of this effort will likely result in another win.
McKinnon has wrapped a solid campaign with a record of 13 wins and eight losses next to its name after 21 outings. A few losses were disappointing, but it showed an ability to match it with the best sides in some big matchups. The visitors will need to bring their very best if they are to cause an upset here, but all it takes is an efficient night offensively and some impressive defensive work and they might just get the job done.
