Frankston dulls Thunder for first win

FRANKSTON has caused a boilover on the road in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Under 18 Boys competition with a 32-point thrashing of previously unbeaten Keilor Thunder. The Blues piled on no less than 20 points in each of the quarters, and lead 74-41 at the final break before eventually winning, 100-68 on Friday night.

Frankston entered the third round of action with back-to-back losses, going down to Sunbury and Sandringham, while Keilor dispatched of Bendigo and Eltham’s second side. Those results might not tell the full story, with the Jets and Sabres looking like title contenders, while the Braves and Wildcats have just one win between them in six matches.

As the season progresses the quality of sides will become clear, though if Friday night’s performance is anything to go by, the Blues are a serious threat. Frankston stormed out of the blocks to lead by 10 points at quarter time, and had built a 22-point advantage by the main break. A quarter leader and that lead was out to an incredible 33 points.

Keilor took the opportunity with bench rotations to gain some scoreboard pressure back and win the last quarter 27-26, though still conceded a triple-digit score in the 32-point loss. While the Thunder had Asahel Fernandez (15 points), Devaughn King (13) and Thomas Maye (11) doing the bulk of the scoring, Frankston’s key scorers seemed unstoppable.

Bailey Marshall put up a strong 24 points to lead all-comers, while Denver Warry (18) and Thomas Williamson (16) also score more than any of the Thunder players. Thomas Nicholas chipped in with a handy 13 points through the victory as Frankston got on the board in season 2025 and will look to build on that performance going forward.

Frankston faces winless sides Bendigo and Casey 2, which is more than likely to result in three consecutive victories by Round 5 and pushing towards the top few in the group. Keilor on the other hand faces a nightmare fortnight, with the two remaining undefeated sides in Casey 1 and Knox.

In other Ashe Pool results, Casey 1 accounted for its second side by 16 points, while Knox defeated Eltham’s second term by 23. Sunbury blitzed McKinnon by 40, while in the remaining match, Sandringham produced a high-scoring 92-76 victory over the Braves.

Meanwhile in the Watson Pool, Kilsyth became the only side to win all three matches thus far after knocking off Diamond Valley by 21 points on the road. The other contests were far closer with Eltham defeating Ballarat by six points, Nunawading accounting for Geelong by eight, Dandenong toppling Melbourne by nine, and Knox’s second side defeating Pakenham by 14.
