Frankston looking to hand Boomers second-straight loss

THE Bulleen Boomers 1 will be looking to bounce back when they take on the Frankston Blues in the VJBL Under 18 Girls competition this weekend.

After some time off over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the teams are back for Round 2 of the second portion of the fixture, which sees the best sides face off in a newly formed division. That will certainly be the case when the Boomers and the Blues lock horns at Frankston Basketball Stadium on Friday night.

The Boomers were the pick of the bunch in the VC Ashe division from 11 rounds of play, and entered the second half of the season as one of the favoured sides.

Despite that, they were handed a loss in the opening round of the fixture, and are now looking for their first win of the VC Championship. The Boomers have been able to get the better of the Blues once this season, but it is a completely different format now.

Bulleen was completely outplayed by Casey to close out their Round 1 encounter, and will need to tighten up on the defensive end of the court. The Boomers allowed 71 points to the opposition last time out, and cannot allow that to happen again.

Chantal Vitale has been the star of the show on the offensive end, and that was demonstrated by a 21-point outing in Round 1. She will likely find the ball in her hands a fair bit against the Blues, as she has proven a reliable avenue to the basket.

The Blues were also solid in the first half of the season, although they did not quite reach the same heights as their Round 2 opponents.

With a fast-paced, high-pressure style of play, Frankston has been able to bring some of the best sides undone, and it will need to do that again on Friday night.

Payback will also be on their mind, as the Boomers proved too good when these two sides went head to head earlier in the year. Frankston looks a much more settled side compared to back then, and will fancy itself as more of a chance this time around.

Chantelle James has been a focal point on offence for the Blues, and that trend will likely continue on Friday night. In the Round 1 loss to the Tigers, she scored a game-high 21 points, and was a shining light with ball in hand. If Frankston is to post a winning score, James will need to fire once again when shooting the basketball.
