Frankston rolls on after taming Broncos

LOOKING unstoppable in this year’s Victorian Youth Championship Men’s division, Frankston Blues produced another incredible offensive performance to destroy Hume City Broncos by 40 points at home. The Round 4 clash pitted the 5-0 Blues up against the 3-1 Broncos, though the former proved far too strong in a high-scoring 120-80 triumph.

Frankston took control in the match from early on, and though Hume City looked to have hte offensive capability to go with the Blues, could not sustain it for four quarters. A 22-point opening term looked promising for the Broncos, before Frankston tightened the screws after the first quarter to pile on 62 points to 36 and blow out the lead to 33 by the final break.

With the game done and dusted and rotations being heavily used by the home team, Hume City worked back somewhat in the final stanza, though were no match losing the quarter 29-22 again and going down, 120-80 at Dreamstreet Lending Arena.

Lachlan Kanngiesser put up 23 points in 18 minutes, knocking down an impressive 5/9 from the three-point line in the win across just 18 minutes on court. With Frankston having the game in the bag early, the Blues had the ability to rest their stars, and no player spent more than 22:52 on the court. That was Lauchlan Mark who had 17 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Others who stepped up on the scoring front for the home team were Jesse Lans (15 points, four assists), Nicholas Beattie (13 points, three rebounds) and Max Jackson (12 points, seven rebounds)) making a statement including from long-range.

For Hume City, it was a tough tale of the tape, but Lance Povh scored 16 points and had two rebounds and two assists, while captain Harris Saldic (12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals) and Carson Taylor-Jones (11 points) were others to work hard despite a losing battle. While struggling to consistently find open looks, Rafferty Gorman did dish off a game-high seven assists, also having four points and three rebounds in the loss.

AROUND THE COURTS

The only other undefeated team to-date is Kilsyth who put Wyndham Basketball to the sword with a 117-93 victory. The team from the west went down in that game, though did get up against neighbouring region Geelong United by seven points the day before. Hume City Broncos – despite the heavy loss to Frankston, backed up with a victory over Nunawading Spectres on Sunday.

It has been a tough season thus far for the Spectres, suffering back-to-back losses on the weekend to Keysborough Cougars and the Broncos to slip to 1-5, while Waverley Falcons and Melbourne Tigers remain winless with four and five losses respectively, going down to Geelong United and Keilor Thunder in the most recent matches.

Knox Raiders picked up a good win over Casey Cavaliers by 11 points, with fellow 4-1 sides Dandenong Ranges and the Thunder keeping in touch with the top two sides. Eltham Wildcats also picked up a win over the Cougars after going down to Diamond Valley Eagles in a high-scoring heartbreak loss, 108-106.
