HAVING produced a seriously impressive campaign in the G League, David Jones Garcia has got reward for effort by snagging a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs for the upcoming 2025/26 NBA season.
Garcia was immense for both the Salt Lake City Stars and the Mexico City Capitanes throughout the most recent G League season, being named to the NBA G League All-Rookie team for his efforts despite changing teams throughout the fixture.
After going undrafted in 2024, Garcia joined the Capitanes on a G League contract and hit the ground running with his offensive production. Across his first four games with the team, the wing averaged numbers of 21.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
These efforts caught the eye of the Utah Jazz, who signed him on a two-way contract, which meant he was now competing against Mexico City and playing for the Salt Lake City Stars when he was not on the bench for the team at NBA level.
His time in Utah did not last too long, as he was waived in early January, after which he continued his time with the Capitanes and picked up exactly where he left off. However, it was his second stint with the team that proved to be the most defining in taking his career to the next level.
His career began to truly take off in March, where he produced a 50-point performance against the San Diego Clippers to showcase his immense ceiling. Garcia backed it up less than two weeks later with another 50-piece to show it was no fluke, while he was also able to demonstrate his all-around game with a triple-double in between these outings.
He finished the season with impressive numbers of 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists, shooting 48.4 per cent from the field, 34.3 per cent from behind the arc and an accurate 91.3 per cent from the charity stripe, with his two 50-point outings the highlight.
Those sorts of performances were impossible to ignore, and he was invited to play with the San Antonio Spurs in the Summer League, where he averaged 22.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in the tournament, playing a big role on the offensive end.
It was enough to warrant a two-way contract for the Spurs, which is a step in the right direction, although he may still spend some time in the G League. However, his outings at the preseason tournament should be enough to be at least trialled off the bench for San Antonio, and there is certainly a spot there for him next to the plethora of point guards the team currently has.
If he can continue to showcase his scoring ability in his limited opportunities, he could slot into San Antonio’s rotation sooner rather than later.
