Garcia the great gets it done again despite loss

ALTHOUGH his team fell painfully short of pulling off the win, Mexico City Capitanes guard David Jones Garcia was unstoppable on the offensive end with a 50-point double-double in the loss to the Valley Suns earlier this week.

Garcia was already in ripping from coming into the clash, having been named G League Player of the Week after cementing himself as one of the stars of the competition with an excellent patch of form. He already had a 50-point performance next to his name, having done so in the win over the San Diego Clippers on March 14 in a breakout showing.

Since then, his scoring production may not have reached those lofty heights, he was still in good touch, recording a triple-double in the week that followed and ensuring he stayed as one of the most in-form players in the competition.

Coming into the clash, the Capitanes were outside of the top six in the Western Conference, and with the fixture edging closer to conclusion, time was running out to make a run towards the postseason. The Suns meanwhile were placed nicely in fifth spot, and entered the match as favourites despite Mexico City’s good form of late.

The sides traded blows in an even first half, with proceedings tied at the main change in an entertaining start to the match. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Suns held a six-point buffer and looked in control of the match, before the Capitanes stormed home in the fourth, forcing overtime with a clutch showing down the stretch. However, the class of the Suns shone through in the extra period, claiming a two-point win.

It may not have been the result he was hoping for, but Garcia’s performance from an individual standpoint was simply outstanding, and was a pure indicator of how strong his scoring power can be on any given night.

He could not have started the game any better, notching 10 points in the first three and a half minutes of play, courtesy of some aggressive drives (where he waved off his teammates and chose to score in isolation), as well as a pair of triples.

With ball in hand, Garcia moves as smoothly as anyone in the G League, with most of his scores coming off the dribble, not requiring a pass to get him open. Instead, he used screens from teammates to get his opponent to trail and not stay in front of him, and let his three-level scoring ability do the talking.

Finding the bottom of the net simply looks effortless for Garcia, who can get himself free with a tight handle and explosive first step and rarely makes a mistake when left wide open.

He had a whopping 33 points at the main change, and his offensive production was the main reason why the Capitanes were still in the game despite facing a quality opposition. The third quarter was quiet for Garcia, who did not trouble the scorers as the Suns began to take control of the contest.

With Mexico City trailing by eight points with just over a minute on the clock in the fourth term, Garcia single-handedly changed the match. He nailed a pair of three-pointers in the final 60 seconds, combining with his teammates to tie the game and send proceedings to overtime.

In the extra period, Garcia and the Capitanes were well-held, but he did manage to break free and score inside on one occasion, but it was ultimately the Suns who prevailed.

Despite the loss, Garcia finished with 50 points on 19/34 shooting from the field and 5/11 shooting from behind the arc, in one of his most productive performances from range all season. He also pulled down 15 rebounds, with 14 of those coming on the defensive end after an opposition miss to deliver the most stat-stuffing performance of 2025 in the G League.

There is no doubt that Garcia is worthy of a two-way contract in the NBA at the very least, given his natural knack for scoring that has been on display in the past couple of weeks. If he keeps up this level of production, clubs will surely come knocking.
