Hume and McKinnon to vie for top three spot

TWO of the top four sides in the Big V Men’s Basketball competition are set to lock horns on the weekend, with the Hume Broncos scheduled to host McKinnon at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Saturday night.

Both sides have been contenders so far this season, and this matchup is set to be one of the most important of the Round 13 fixture. There has been some high quality basketball from the two sides throughout the year, and Saturday’s contest is set to be a ripper.

The Broncos have been one of the better sides in season 2022, claiming nine wins from their 15 outings. That record is good enough for third spot in the standings, and they look destined to compete in the postseason at the end of the fixture. Last weekend saw the Broncos take down the Steelers, but not without an almighty scare.

Hume had to deliver a fair comeback to get the win, despite the Steelers being placed lower on the ladder. The Broncos will need to deliver a better performance against a formidable opposition this time around. To add to the pressure, they could also lose third spot in the standings if they fall to McKinnon, who are just one win behind. Expect the home side to come out firing, with Chris Elder likely leading the way.

McKinnon has been impressive as well in the opening 13 rounds, with eight wins coming from 14 outings. The visitors will enter this game as slight underdogs, but are every chance to claim the win. They have delivered a few impressive wins over the last few weeks, headlined by a double-digit triumph over Camberwell in Round 12.

McKinnon was ultra impressive in that game, and will be looking to duplicate that effort against a tougher opponent. Third spot is up for grabs for McKinnon here, so it will be eager to get the job done and move up the standings with the season slowly edging towards conclusion.

Nathan Davis produced a season-high 40 points in the win over Camberwell, delivering one of the most impressive offence showings of any individual in 2022. If he can replicate that effort, then it will be tough to slow down an in-form McKinnon side. Either way, Saturday’s contest is shaping up as a crucial one in terms of defining the ladder.
