Jets continue to soar after taming Broncos

THE Sunbury Jets claimed a fairly dominant win in the Big V women’s competition on the weekend, taking down the Hume Broncos to the tune of 19-point triumph when the two sides went head-to-head at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium on Saturday evening.

There was a fair bit of hype surrounding the contest coming in, but the Jets were certainly the favourites after knocking off the top two sides in recent weeks. In the end, they justified these predicitions, producing a clinical showing, particularly in the first three quarters when the game was up for grabs. Sunbury jumped out to a first-quarter lead thanks to some excellent work on both ends of the court. The Broncos found themselves on the back foot all of a sudden, and could not conjure a strong enough response to keep themselves in the game. While Hume fought back in the final term, it was largely due to the fact that the Jets took the foot off the gas on their way to a big win.

The win sees the Jets improve to a record of 10 wins and six losses, which puts them well and truly inside the top-four and unlikely to drop out in the last five weeks. They have been the form team of the competition in recent weeks, and Saturday evening was a reflection of that. Meanwhile, life gets a lot tricker for the Broncos, whose finals chances are now hanging by a thread after sustaining their 10th loss of season 2022.

As many expected, Maria Steen Jespersen led the way for the Jets in the victory, producing another dominant double-double. She delivered an eye-catching 28 points (a game-high) and 11 rebounds (a team-high) and was a force to be reckoned with. While it was not her most efficient night from the field, it is a testament to how damaging she can be with ball in hand given she still almost made it to 30 points in the end.

Hume’s Briana Gray gave it her all in an attempt to keep the Broncos in the game, but did not recieve enough help. She finished the game with a 23 points, which was the most of anyone on her side. Gray also controlled the skies, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds as she attempted to secure as many possessions for her side as possible.

The Jets led by 10 points at the first change of play, keeping the Broncos at arms’ length at all times, but Hume was still in the contest, and could fight back on the scoreboard in the second half if its offence was executed well. However, quarter number three saw the Jets essentially cement the result with a 30-17 period. The Broncos managed to outscore the opposition in the final 10 minutes, but the Sunbury’s win was already secure by this point.

The Jets will aim to keep rolling when they take on Southern Peninsula in Round 15, while that same weekend will see the Broncos look to bounce back against Pakenham.
