ROUND 10 of the 2023 NBL1 North Women’s season saw some big performances as some of the competition’s best posted some massive numbers.
One of the best outings of the round came from Mia Loyd, who helped lead her Brisbane Capitals past the South West Metro Pirates with a dominant all-around performance.
Despite claiming the win, the Capitals came into the match at Auchenflower Stadium on Friday night as underdogs, given the Pirates had sustained only a pair of losses from its first 11 matches, while Brisbane had been strong at times, but was unable to produce it at a consistent level.
The Pirates started the game strong, clamping up defensively and holding the home side to just 16 points in the opening quarter to take the lead at the first change.
However, the Capitals steadily managed to take control of the match, gaining a scoreboard advantage in the second quarter, before putting the game to bed with a 23-13 final term en route to a 14-point win.
Loyd was the clear standout of the match, doing a bit of everything to help guide her side to win number seven in the 2023 fixture.
Brisbane Capitals (86) def. SW Metro Pirates (72)
Mia Loyd – 33 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, one block
Loyd was a driving force in getting the Capitals over the line against one of the championship favourites to start the year, posting some huge numbers in a towering display.
As a scorer, no one else on the court could match her output, finishing with a game-high 33 points on efficient shooting from the field. Doing most of her damage from inside the arc, Loyd shot 11/18 from the field, including 9/14 from two-point territory as she attacked the paint with ferocity and put plenty of pressure on the rim.
Although most of her baskets came from inside, the forward was able to splash home two three-pointers on five attempts. Despite not being her preferred method of scoring, she showed a strong enough shooting action to chime in for a pair of triples.
On the boards, Loyd was also able to post a game-high figure of 14, crashing the glass with intent and often establishing ideal position before the shot was even released. Of her 14 boards, 13 came on the defensive end, which played a key role in slowing down the Pirates’ offence and not allowing any second chance points.
Remarkably, Loyd was also one of the game’s premier playmakers with an equal game-high eight assists. Despite finding plenty of space with ball in hand and having plenty of success shooting the rock, the 29-year-old showed composure to ensure her side put up the best look possible, regardless of who was on the end of the shot in the end.
In a truly complete offensive performance, Loyd tormented the Pirates with her ability to pop up and impact the match in a number of ways.
