McClung magic sees Osceola reach finals

ANOTHER magnificent performance from Mac McClung has led the Osceola Magic past the Maine Celtics and into the finals series of the G League earlier today.

McClung is widely known for his feats in the NBA Dunk Contest, which he has won for the last three years thanks to an unmatched vertical leap and serious creativity with his selection. However, the guard has been putting together some eye-catching offensive performances for the Magic in the G League, showing there is more to his game than his high-flying feats.

Coming into the conference final matchup against the Celtics, McClung had 39 points in the semifinals to help his side book a spot in the penultimate round. It was always going to be an enthralling duel between him and fellow in-form guard and recently named G League MVP JD Davison, and the battle loomed likely to define the match.

It was a tight contest throughout the match, with Osceola consistently holding a slim lead throughout the first half and into the third term. However, the Celtics took the lead with seven minutes to play in the period, and threatened to overrun the Magic. That was when McClung stepped up, helping his side retake the lead and hold on for a 13-point lead and a spot in the Finals.

McClung was the defining figure in the match, with his shotmaking unmatched throughout the contest and his shotmaking proving vital within the context of the game.

McClung remarkably topped his efforts from the previous match, again proving unstoppable with ball in hand as he led the Magic out of the Eastern Conference and into the final matchup.

It was a reasonably slow start to the match for the lofty standards the guard had produced in recent weeks, and it saw the Celtics remain in the contest after Osceola could not break away on the scoreboard in the opening frame.

However, the second term belonged to McClung, who completely took over the match with his scoring ability and ensured the Magic stayed ahead despite a massive push from Maine down the other end. The three-time dunk champion poured in 20 points in the second quarter alone, changing the narrative of the match and ensuring the Magic stayed in front at the main change.

He helped his side wrestle back momentum after Maine took the lead in the third quarter, nailing a floater to retake the advantage on the scoreboard and the Celtics never looked back from there, winning the period 32-24, which ended up defining the match.

McClung finished the piece with a whopping 42 points on 16/26 shooting from the field and 3/7 shooting from behind the arc, with the Celtics having no answer to his scoring ability, despite 34 points and 11 assists from Davison.

McClung and the Magic will now turn their attention to the best of three series against the Stockton Kings, who punched their ticket to the decider out of the Western Conference.
