Morris makes moves in championship game

ON THE biggest stage of all, Alexis Morris seemed to thrive, as she led her LSU Tigers to the 2023 NCAAW Championship with a strong outing.

The Tigers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes at American Airlines Centre on Monday morning to the tune of 17 points, securing their first ever National Championship in emphatic fashion. The Tigers broke away in the second quarter with a 32-20 term, taking a full head of steam into the second half.

Although the Hawkeyes gave it their all in the final two quarters and tried to drag themselves back into the match, the deficit remained at double-digits and LSU claimed a 102-85 victory, capping off a terrific season for the Tigers.

Morris was a key figure in the Championship-clinching victory, stepping up her game with the lights shining bright in the title game.

Alexis Morris – 21 points, two rebounds, nine assists, one steal

Morris was able to take her game to another level in the most important game of the year for the Tigers, delivering the best performance of anyone in an LSU jersey, despite sharing the floor with some big names.

Her 21 points were vital in getting the Tigers over the line, and showcased her ability to produce heavily as an offensive player. She shot a reasonably accurate clip from the field, only taking decent looks and never forcing up any unnecessary shots.

Morris drained eight shots on 14 attempts, with most of these coming from two-point territory. A mid-range menace who has the ability to drive inside and attack the hoop, Morris was constantly proving a thorn in Iowa’s side from a defensive standpoint.

Her willingness to push downhill and drive to the rim saw a few trips to the free throw line, where she went a perfect 4/4, not fazed by the crowd or the occasion.

She was just as damaging on the playmaking side of things too, looking to get everyone involved and draw in the defence before dishing out to find her teammates.

A game-high nine dimes emphasised just how well she was as a creator, combining with the likes of Jasmine Carson (22 points) and Ladazhia Williams (20 points) to generate plenty of offence for the Tigers, which was a matchwinning factor.

Morris perfectly displayed that she is built for the big stage with a telling performance in the biggest game of her life, driving LSU to a championship and showing no signs of nerves.
