THE NBA Draft has wrapped up, and the next crop of players at the top level are now fully entrenched in their respective teams as season approaches in the coming months.
In fact, with the Summer League kicking off over the past couple of weeks, the youngsters are now even hitting the court for the first time in an exciting injection of youth to the world’s biggest and best league.
Given the draft has concluded, Rookie Me Central will be taking a look at how each side fared on one of the biggest nights on the basketball calendar.
The next teams to put up for discussion are the Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets, a trio of teams who entered the draft with promising young pieces, and left with even more.
Orlando Magic
The Magic established themselves last season as one of the brightest rosters in the competition, and did those claims no harm with their two selections inside the top 11.
First up, Orlando picked up Anthony Black with the sixth overall selection, who adds even more talent to the team’s guard spot. At six-foot-seven, there are not too many point guards who can match up on Black in terms of size, and his skill makes him an even more exciting prospect. He can take control of an offence and run things smoothly as the primary ball-handler. It does create questions on how the team will operate with Black, Cole Anthony and Jalen Suggs all looking to play a similar role, but the former’s talent is undeniable.
Five picks later, the team picked up Jett Howard in a surprising move to many. Son of former NBA gun Juwan, Howard is a wing who has plenty of scoring potential, which has been in plain view during the NBA Summer League over the past week.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks entered the draft with just one pick, but left with two players thanks to some crafty trades on the night.
They picked up big man Dereck Lively II, who will add serious frontcourt presence to a team that is loaded with talent at the guard position. His mobility and size form an exciting combination, while he is established as a game-changing contributor on the defensive end. If he can continue to develop his production offensively, the sky is the limit for Lively II.
The Mavericks also acquired Olivier-Maxence Prosper via trade, who should make the team a lot deeper at the power forward position. He is an elite athlete who tested extremely well prior to the draft, and is a bit of a glue piece offensively, set to compliment the likes of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving well, given both players demand a fair few touches.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets had to wait until the 20’s to make their first selection of the draft, but had back to back picks and acquired some more young pieces.
First up, Brooklyn secured the services of forward Noah Clowney, who stood out during his college career and impressed the Nets enough to take him this high. His mobility is extremely impressive given he stands six-foot-10, and his shooting form shows plenty of promise, especially from downtown, which is a crucial factor given the blueprint of the modern game.
The following pick, the Nets picked up Dariq Whitehead, who is one of the best outside shooters in the entire draft class. He should improve the team’s perimeter presence in a big way thanks to his smooth shooting motion, while Whitehead’s athleticism also gives cause for excitement as his offensive game continues to develop.
The Nets used their final selection of the night to acquire Jalen Wilson, a wing who can find the bottom of the net in a variety of ways.
