NBA Draft Team Wrap – Spurs, Suns, Thunder

THE NBA Draft has wrapped up, and the next crop of players at the top level are now fully entrenched in their respective teams as season approaches in the coming months.

In fact, with the Summer League taking place over the past few weeks, some of the brightest draftees have already begun making a name for themselves in the NBA, with a fair few catching the eye with dominant performances.

Given the draft has concluded, Rookie Me Central will be taking a look at how each side fared on one of the biggest nights on the basketball calendar.

We are reaching the final batch of teams in this series, today taking a look at the San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder, all of whom added key pieces that could loom as vital players for the future.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs were the most discussed team leading into the draft, having secured the number-one pick in the lottery, certain to take French phenom Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio did as expected, and added one of the most hyped prospects in NBA history.

Wembanyama was clearly the best player in the class, and is now shaping as the team’s future on his own moving forward. A seven-foot-four forward/center with guard-like ball-handling and shooting, he appears destined for stardom, making the Spurs’ decision with the number-one pick extremely easy coming into the draft.

Although much of the hype for San Antonio on draft night was surrounding Wembanyama, some may have missed that the Spurs also selected Sidy Cissoko with the 44th pick. Having suited up with the G-League Ignite last season, he offers height at the guard position, standing six-foot-eight and offering a potential mismatch for opposition teams in the future. The French guard has a high ceiling due to his defensive tools, and appears a long term prospect for the team.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns made just the one selection on draft night, but are currently in their championship window, so they are not looking to build too much draft capital at the expense of players that can impact immediately.

With the team’s sole pick at 52 on the night, Phoenix picked up Toumani Camara, a forward from Belgium. Although he will be undersized at the four, Camara offers athleticism and efficiency on the offensive end as his biggest strengths, while his frame makes him a physical defender that can have an impact on both ends.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Thunder GM Sam Presti has famously gathered a serious arsenal of draft picks, and used two of these to add to the team’s young core that is sure to make an impact in the future.

The Thunder made a trade with their first pick, dealing with the Dallas Mavericks to ensure they acquired the services of Cason Wallace. A guard out of Kentucky, Wallace brings a lot to the table in the backcourt, particularly on the defensive end. He is one of the best perimeter defenders in the entire class, with his ability to stay in front of the opposition and poke the ball free on plenty of occasions throughout the match. Wallace’s offence is also improving, showing an ability to create his own shot and find the bottom of the net from all three levels.

Oklahoma City’s second selection saw the team take Keyontae Johnson at pick 50. Johnson’s story is a remarkable one, given he collapsed on-court in 2020, and overcame a medically induced coma to continue his basketball career and make the NBA. A small forward that plays with plenty of passion, Johnson uses his physicality to impact the game and can find the bottom of the net playing off ball, making him a valuable addition to a Thunder side that has a fair few ball-dominant players.
