NBA Draft Team Wraps – Cavaliers, Clippers, Grizzlies

THE NBA Draft has wrapped up, and the next crop of players at the top level are now fully entrenched in their respective teams as the season approaches in the coming months.

In fact, with the Summer League kicking off earlier this week, the youngsters are now even hitting the court for the first time in an exciting injection of youth to the world’s biggest and best league.

Given the draft has concluded, Rookie Me Central will be taking a look at how each side fared on one of the biggest nights on the basketball calendar.

The next teams on the agenda are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies, all of whom addressed key needs on their respective rosters.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers had to wait until the final 10 picks of the night before making their selection, but managed to make it count by taking a familiar name with the 49th pick.

Cleveland selected Emoni Bates with their sole selection on draft night, who is one of the most intriguing prospects of the entire draft class. Rewinding a few years, Bates was touted as one of the best players in the crop, drawing comparisons to one of the best scorers in NBA history in Kevin Durant. However, injuries and a drop in form derailed his path to a top 10 selection, and he was no certainty to earn an NBA contract at all.

However, the Cavaliers took the punt late in the picture, and it could be a gamble that pays dividends if he can return to the potential he showed earlier in his junior career. Bates has the tools to find the bottom of the net from almost anywhere, and if he can stay healthy and regain his confidence, Cleveland may have snagged one of the steals of the draft.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers have one of the biggest payrolls in the entire NBA, so their draft selections are crucial to getting solid players on their roster for as little money as possible, as well as a look towards the future.

The Clippers made their first selection at 30, picking Kobe Brown with the final acquisition of the first round. The forward brings plenty of experience given he is slightly older than many of the players in the draft class, and he should be accelerated into the rotation earlier than others as a result of this.

His versatility is a true drawing factor, given the fact that he played every position at college level and was quite successful in doing so. While his biggest strength is his ability to score at the rim, Brown’s perimeter shooting took a massive leap in his most recent college season, and he has shown enough that he could make an impact at NBA level.

The Clippers also acquired wing Jordan Miller with the 48th pick in the draft, who is a proven slasher with an improving outside shot.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies kicked things off by drafting Marcus Sasser with the 25th pick in the draft, but he was moved to Boston shortly after.

Just 20 picks later at 45, Memphis selected Gregory Jackson II, a six-foot-nine power forward out of South Carolina. He does his best work on the offensive end, capable of doing just about anything when the ball is in his hands. Jackson II can score across all three levels, and should develop nicely alongside star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. for the Grizzlies.

Memphis was not done yet, picking up Tarik Biberovic with the 56th selection of the night, who brings experience playing basketball in Turkey. While there are still question marks as to if his game will convert to NBA level, he could slot in nicely as an off-ball shooting wing, a role that is as popular as ever in the current climate of the competition.
