NBL1 Central Players of the Week – Round 6

THERE was plenty of action to unpack in Round 6 of the National Basketball League (NBL)1 Central competition last weekend, including some outstanding performances from an individual standpoint.

ANZAC Round always brings out special showings from the biggest names, and 2024 was no exception, with several eye-catching statlines across the span of Thursday to Saturday.

There were a total of 21 games taking place across the Men’s and Women’s division, and some huge numbers delivered as the season rockets towards the halfway mark of the fixture.

With that in mind, Rookie Me Central will be taking a look at the standout performances from both divisions, after some big numbers were posted over the weekend. This time, Anthony Drmic and Brooke Basham take home the honours after exploding on the offensive end once again.

Anthony Drmic (West Adelaide Bearcats) vs. Norwood Flames

36 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, one steal

Two stat-stuffing performances in two weeks from Drmic is reflective of how well he has been playing throughout the 2024 season.

The NBL wing has shown that when at his best offensively, he is a match-winning factor for the Bearcats, and was again the standout as West Adelaide claimed a massive 26-point win over the Flames at Port Adelaide Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

His 36 points followed 47 from the week before, and was extremely accurate this time around, making 14 shots on 20 attempts. Knocking down shots from inside, mid-range and behind the arc (3/7 3PT), and was a handful for whoever was defending him from Norwood.

On the glass, Drmic plays above his height, and often swoops on the loose ball as the big men jostle for position under the ring. All 14 of his boards came on the defensive end, ensuring Norwood could never start any momentum with second chance points.

It was yet another dominant performance from Drmic, who has posted two of the strongest NBL1 performances of the season.

Brooke Basham (North Adelaide Rockets) vs. West Adelaide Bearcats

43 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three steals

Basham was the player of the round across both the Men’s and Women’s division, delivering yet another outstanding scoring showing for the Rockets.

It was a comfortable 17-point win for North Adelaide over the Bearcats at The Lights Community and Sports Centre on ANZAC Day, with the team’s star stepping up on another big occasion as she has done so many times in the past.

Basham showed the ability to score at all three levels, despite increased defensive attention from West Adelaide as the game rolled on.

Shooting 16/27 from the field, Basham had the license to shoot from the coaching staff and repaid the team in a big way. From inside the arc, she shot 11/17, while Basham also knocked down five triples on 10 attempts.

She almost recorded a triple-double with nine boards, while proving a formidable playmaker with six dimes as well.

Basham is extremely established as an explosive scorer, and torched the Bearcats to take home the ANZAC Medal as well.
