DESPITE only one round left to play before finals, records are still being broken in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). Boomers skipper, Jenna O’Hea and Townsville star, Ally Malott both did well on the assists, racking up notable individual milestones. But all the talk has been about the UC Capitals, who won their last seven games to finish on top of the table. Kelsey Griffin became the Team of the Week record-holder while fellow Capitals teammate, Kelly Wilson climbed up to sixth on the all-time games played list.

Jenna O’Hea enters the top 10 for all-time assists

Jenna O’Hea had a week to remember, playing one of her best rounds of the season to be named in the WNBL Team of the Week. Against Adelaide, she racked up another memorable milestone, moving into the top 10 for all-time assists. Her five assists made her all-time total 904, securing her spot at 10th on the all-time assists list. She could easily move into ninth before the finals begins, with Sharin Milner sitting ninth on 908 assists. The all-time leader is three-time WNBL championship player, Kristen Veal on 1,617 career assists. Current players Kelly Wilson (1,135) and Belinda Snell (1,090) sit third and fourth on the all-time list, respectively.

Kelsey Griffin becomes new WNBL Team of the Week record-holder

Kelsey Griffin can hardly do no wrong this season, featuring in the WNBL Team of the Week for a record 10th time. Last round, she equalled Suzy Batkovic’s accolade of nine Team of the Week appearances, and went one better in Round 14. Griffin averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists over the course of the round, helping the Capitals secure two important victories heading into the final round of the season. Griffin was previously named in the WNBL Team of the Week in rounds two, four, five, six, seven, nine, 10, 11 and 13.

Kelly Wilson climbs up to sixth on the all-time games played list

Kelly Wilson has been a mainstay in the Capitals’ line-up this season, and as such, has moved into sixth place on the all-time games played list. Wilson played her 370th WNBL game against the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday, where her team secured another blistering victory. She moved past WNBL legend, Robyn Maher, who has made 369 league appearances. Wilson isn’t too far off the all-time games played leader either. Five-time WNBL championship player, Jess Bibby currently holds top spot on the leaderboard with 394 games.

Malott racks up career-high assists

In a big win over the Dandenong Rangers, Ally Malott starred for the Townsville Fire. Not only did she rack up seven points and five rebounds, but she also recorded a career-high amount of assists. The American star racked up a game-high seven assists, giving her a new career-high in the assists department.

Capitals storming home

The UC Capitals have found their devastating form at the perfect time of the season, achieving a eight-game winning streak at the end of Round 14. This stunning run began in Round 10, where the Capitals defeated the Lynx. Since then, they have claimed the scalps of the Rangers and Fire twice, as well as Bendigo and Sydney Uni. Over this period, the Capitals have averaged a winning margin of 28.6 wins, with their best performance coming against Dandenong, where the Capitals doubled the Rangers’ score to secure a 43-point win. Before this winning streak, the Capitals had won seven games and lost five, with their biggest winning streak occurring over Rounds 1 and 2, securing three straight wins.
