Number crunching: WNBL – Round 3
SOME teams and players are travelling nicely after three rounds of Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) action. Despite both sides winning two games, Adelaide and Dandenong sit at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of average winning margins. Meanwhile for the Fire, Suzy Batkovic has been dominating on the boards while Kia Nurse keeps getting buckets with the Capitals. Perth centre, Maddison Allen has been one of the more impressive defensive players after three rounds.
Adelaide has highest average winning margin
The Lightning have won two games to date and sit third on the table. The side would’ve liked to have won one or two more matches up until this point but nevertheless, Adelaide has been convincing in its wins. The Lightning upset leading contenders, Perth in Round 1, getting a 12-point win. After a winless Round 2, Round 3 brought better luck for the Lightning, beating Bendigo by 28 points. This brings their average winning margin to 20 points, the highest in the league.
Dandenong has lowest average winning margin
It’s been hard for Dandenong to get a win so far in the WNBL. The Rangers have two wins from four games, but sit second last with a low percentage. This is due to a total winning margin of nine points. The Rangers began their season with two consecutive wins, beating Townsville by five points then Sydney Uni by four. This brings their average winning margin to 4.5 points.
Suzy Batkovic has racked up double figure rebounds in all but one game
Batkovic continues to dominate in the WNBL, and looks like she will go out on a big high. The 37 year-old has been dominating the boards so far, pulling down more than 10 rebounds in all but one game she’s played. In her first game, she grabbed 16 boards and followed this up with 12 boards in the Fire’s next match-up. She had a quiet game against Perth, only pulling down six rebounds, but followed this up with another big game against the Flames, pulling down 12 rebounds and handing them a 0-4 start to the season.
Kia Nurse has scored more than 10 points in each game she’s played
UC Capitals guard/ forward, Kia Nurse has been a huge reason why the Capitals have experienced so much early success so far this season. She has racked up double figures in each of her four games for the Capitals this season. Nurse has scored more than 20 points in two games and more than 10 points in another two games. Against the Flames in Round 1, Nurse scored 26 points, then followed this up with 12 points against the Boomers. In the same weekend, Nurse scored 14 points against Adelaide then put up her best points to date, scoring 29 against Melbourne.
Maddison Allen leads the way in blocks
Allen has been a prominent centre in the WNBL so far. She’s impressed in her defensive game, averaging 2.25 blocks per game. Allen has racked up nine blocks in total from Perth’s four games.
