Olowoniyi on a misson for Screaming Eagles

MELBOURNE product Stephen Olowoniyi is a six-foot-eight sophomore who has become a focal point for the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. After a freshman year in which Olowoniyi played 32 games and averaged a tick over 18 minutes per contest for Virginia Military, he has slotted into a starting wing role that has allowed his game to blossom. He has nearly doubled his points per game and is shooting superb splits for the season.

Olowoinyi is a super athletic utility who is a prolific rebounder and talented scorer. He has improved as a shooter, upping his free throw percentage by nearly 19 per cent from year one to year two of his college career. He is shooting a highly efficient 65 per cent through nine games this season and is having a stellar defensive year averaging a steal per game and nearly a block per game as well.

Last season with Virginia Military the Victorian forward was an explosive spark plug off the bench, scoring quickly and blocking shots. Despite Olowoniyi’s promising play, he started just one game as the Keydets went 4-28 for the season and bowed out in the first round of the SoCon tournament in a blowout loss to East Tennessee State.

Southern Indiana also struggled last season under fourth year head coach Stan Gouard, finishing with a record of 8-24. The addition of Olowoniyi to their starting lineup has spurred the Screaming Eagles to begin the 2024-25 season, and despite three straight losses to open their account (two of which went to overtime), they have now won four of their last six games. Olowoniyi has led the charge for his side, averaging over 15 points per game in that period and shooting 67 per cent from the field.

With just one game remaining in the non-conference regular season period Southern Indiana sits fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, and will begin the OVC regular season on December 19th against Tennessee State. They will look to bounce back from their narrow three-point loss to Southern Illinois on December 15th when they tackle Shawnee State to close the opening period of the season.

Olowoniyi has led his team in points in three consecutive games, and will seek to continue this upward trend of scoring as the Screaming Eagles push towards March.
