AS EXPECTED, the SEM Phoenix have taken down the Cairns Taipans, recording their 19th win of the season and continuing their hunt for the first seed. Although the game was a blowout, Cairns stayed in the game all throughout until the end of the third quarter, when the Phoenix went on a scoring run and started to tear the opposition apart.
This is the Taipans’ 20th loss of the season, bringing their record to just 7-20 to be in 9th place on the table. It has seemed to be that the Taipans just have something missing – a glue piece that connects the team together to build that chemistry, but it just hasn’t been filled throughout the year.
Angus Glover led the game in scoring, catching fire off the bench, scoring 22 along with five triples, further proving himself as one of the best shooters in the competition, and an incredible role player who can get hot in a matter of minutes.
Wes Iwundu also continued his stretch of 20-point games, with 21 and five three-pointers. SEM Phoenix scored an incredible 21 threes on 51 per cent shooting, which is the most three pointers in a game by a team in NBL history. A feat like that with such efficiency is unheard of, which is why them capturing the win was inevitable.
Ian Clark has also showed how great of a signing he was for the Phoenix, scoring 19 points with again, five threes. In his last three games, he is averaging 23.3 points per game off the bench. While their main option Nathan Sobey struggled to score, he was able to distribute the ball as he had a team high nine assists.
The Taipans did not necessarily play bad, the loss came because of how well the Phoenix performed. The team shot an above-average 50 per cent from the field and scored 91 points, with Jack McVeigh leading the way with 21, and Andrew Andrews with 20 and 11 assists. In Andrews’ last five games, he is averaging 14.8 points and 10 assists, which would make him the league leader in assists. Kyrin Galloway also had a solid performance recording 17 points, and Lachlan Barker scored 11.
While the Phoenix aim to get the first spot on the table leading up to finals, the Taipans are just trying to make the most of the remainder of the season and then prepare for a reboot for NBL27.
