Sabres continue to roll with win over Wildcats

THE SANDRINGHAM Sabres have remained undefeated in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Under-18 Boys VC Ashe competition, defeating the Eltham Wildcats 2 by 28 points at Sandringham Leisure Centre on Friday night.

The Sabres have been one of the best sides to start the season, boasting a stacked roster with several players capable of putting together a match-winning performance on any given night. It is a team headlined by talented 15-year-old Max Pavey, who again showed why he is one of the most exciting prospects in the country with another exceptional performance playing above his age group.

Pavey was the leading scorer for the match for the Sabres with 20 points, improving as the match rolled on, showing the hype surrounding his game is real. Playing as a wing for the Sabres, he was often appointed point guard for Sandringham, using a tight handle to get to his spots and proving successful as the focal point for his team on the offensive end.

Despite being just 15 years of age, Pavey has the athleticism to throw down a dunk, and did so against Eltham to get his side truly up and about. The Wildcats were putting up a strong fight up to that point in the match, but Pavey certainly inspired his team with a transition slam in the second quarter.

The Sabres were simply too big for the Wildcats, who were easily outsized by the opposition and largely kept themselves in the match with jumpshots. Michael Fitton was having his way in the paint, pulling down rebounds as he pleased and hitting the scoreboard for 14 points of his own.

Also impressing for the Sabres was the smooth moving Kaleb Johnson, who popped up everywhere for Sandringham both in transition and in half court sets. He also worked his way into the match and finished with 15 points of his own, with many coming at the cup, avoiding defensive pressure from Eltham.

For the Wildcats, Cruz Xanthoulakis and Xavier Toohey led the way on the offensive end, with both players pouring in 17 points for the match and keeping their side in the contest for much of the first half. Charlie Kapakoulakis rounded out the double-digit scorers for Eltham with 10 points. Although the Wildcats did well to stay in the fight, they were ultimately no match for a firing Sabres team.

The VJBL will now take a three-week break, before returning in early May.
