Sabres do it again to continue dominant campaign

THE SANDRINGHAM Sabres 1 have shown no signs of slowing down in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Under-18 Girls VC Ashe division, recording another big win, this time over the Casey Cavaliers.

The Sabres have been unstoppable this season, and at this stage, it is hard to see anyone pass them in championship favouritism, still remaining unbeaten after nine rounds of play, a feat no other team has been able to manage.

In another emphatic performance, the Sabres won all four quarters at Sandringham Family Leisure Centre on Friday night en route to another massive win.

Sandringham Sabres (85) def. Casey Cavaliers (58)

It was a strong start early from Sandringham, immediately putting the Cavaliers under scoreboard pressure and looking difficult to contain on the scoring front. It took just over a half of the first quarter for the Sabres to jump out to a double-digit lead, and a late basket in the opening frame to Georgia Baensch saw the home side take a 12-point buffer into the first change.

The Cavaliers tried extremely hard to come out of quarter time with more aggression, and pushed the ball inside more than the first term in the opening minutes of the second frame. However, the Sabres began to find their eye from behind the arc, and suddenly the margin ballooned out to 20 points on the back of some excellent shooting. At the main break, Sandringham held a 16-point buffer and looked completely in control of the contest.

It was another dominant display from the home side coming out of half-time, pushing their lead out to as much as 30 points with the Cavaliers unable to match the offensive production of Sandringham. A late pair of buckets to Casey cut that margin down to 26 points at the final break, but it was still all Sabres with a quarter to play.

It was certainly an improved effort from the visitors in the final frame, slowing down a Sabres side that was admittedly slowing down with the win already in hand. Regardless, it was a positive sign for the Cavaliers to not let the margin get much worse, eventually falling by 27 points.

Madeline Angus was the star of the show for the Sabres, posting a game-high 26 points in an excellent offensive showing in what proved to be a strong team performance. Lily Newman-Morris was her usual impactful self with 16 points, while Melinna Kapetanas (13 points) and Madison Ryan (12 points) also caught the eye.

For the Cavaliers, Vanessa Tavete led the way with a team-high 17 points in a gutsy performance, constantly looking to generate some much needed offence for Casey. Also catching the eye was Kendra Rivet, who had 13 points of her own and can hold her head high.

ACROSS THE COURTS

The Eltham Wildcats were far too good for the Westgate Imperials at RecWest Baybrook on Friday night, claiming a 38-point win on the back of a 33-point scoring explosion from Sophie Richardson, who was far and away the biggest factor in the match.

In a thrilling affair, the McKinnon Cougars snuck away from Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre with a four-point win over the Melbourne Tigers after storming home with a 20-12 final term to overrun the home side.

The Keilor Thunder got the job done after grinding out an eight-point win over the Surfcoast Chargers at Wurdi Baierr stadium, keeping their noses in front for most of the game and holding on in the closing minutes.

The Sandringham Sabres 2 capped off a successful evening for the club by claiming a 25-point win over the Frankston Blues at Dreamstreet Lending Arena, winning all four quarters in an emphatic display on the road.
