Sabres storm past Westgate to remain unbeaten

ANOTHER week, another dominant performance from Sandringham Sabres’ VJBL Under 18 Girls’ side, this time producing a whopping 61-point win over the struggling Westgate in the VC Ashe pool. The Sabres scored 20-plus points in each of the four quarters, while keeping Westgate to 10 points or less in each term on their way to a dominant 94-33 victory.

It was clear from the get-go that the contest was a mis-match with the unbeaten Sabres quickly getting on top of the 1-2 Westgate side. By quarter time the lead was already out to 17 points, and when the teams broke for half-time, that deficit had ballooned out to 29 points. A further dominant term saw Sandringham increase it to 30, and in refusing to ease up, the Sabres piled on 26 points to seven in the last quarter to finish off with a massive victory.

Lily Newman-Morris put up 20 points in the victory, with her and the reliable Madison Ryan (19) outscoring the opposition by themselves. However every player on the Sabres side got in on the action, as Melinna Kapetanas (12 points) and Maddison Carr (11) both hit double figures. Madeline Angus (nine), Ella Wickstrom (eight) and Makayla Craven (seven) had nights out.

For Westgate, it was largely a two-player show with Tilly McNamara recording 13 points, while Mikayla Stasey managed 11. The defeat moved the team to 1-3 for the season, and only ahead of Sandringham’s second side, though it was clear the visitors were no match for the Sabres number on team. Meanwhile Sandringham leads all-comers with a massive percentage of 220.45, one win clear of McKinnon Cougars and Casey Cavaliers.

In other VC Ashe results, McKinnon scored a 20-point victory over the Sabres’ second side, as Casey beat Surf Coast by 13. Keilor Thunder won a thriller against Eltham Wildcats 50-45, while it was the complete opposite in Frankston as Melbourne Tigers gave the home side the Blues with a 62-18 triumph.

Meanwhile in the VC Ashe competition, three teams still somehow remain unbeaten after four rounds with the gap widening between the best and worst sides. Geelong United toppled Kilsyth Cobras by 10 points, Dandenong Rangers destroyed Bulleen Boomers by 32 and Nunawading Spectres were too good for Casey Cavaliers’ second side in a 58-35 victory. All three are yet to be beaten, while in the other two matches, Diamond Valley bested Ballarat 80-71, while Bendigo beat Melbourne’s second side, 51-39.
