AMY ATWELL poured in 22 points as the Perth Lynx made it six wins in a row during Round 11 action of the WNBL. The Lynx climb to 12-3 for the season, setting up a must-see top-of-the-table clash against the Bendigo Spirit on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a spirited effort from a gutsy Geelong United side that was led by Alex Sharp’s 16 point, 10 rebound double-double, while Jazmin Shelley also scored 16 points to go with five rebounds and three steals. Haley Jones and Elissa Brett combined to add 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Geelong scored 38 points in the paint to keep itself in the game but left its run too late as two huge threes in the final 30 seconds wasn’t enough for the home team.
Shelley knocked down a shot from deep with 25 seconds remaining to drag the deficit back to four points, and some pressure defence forced a quick turnover and Geelong got the ball back. Gemma Potter found herself with a three-point shot at the top of the arc which she nailed to bring it back to just a one-point ball game, before her side fouled Atwell with nine seconds remaining.
Atwell nailed both free throws to extend the lead to three and Brett’s heave at the buzzer was no good, Perth running out winners in a thriller.
Atwell led all comers for the visitors, her 22 points including four triples. Miela Sowah dropped in an efficient 14 points while Laeticia Amihere and Anneli Maley both posted big double-doubles.
Maley struggled with her shooting but scored 11 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Amihere’s 12 points mostly came from the free throw line where she went 8/9, and she also battled for 13 rebounds. Including the late one that led to Geelong’s final three-pointer, Amihere turned the ball over eight times in a performance she will want to move past.
Geelong remains in the hunt for the finals despite the loss and have two games to look forward to in Round 12 as United tackle the Sydney Flames on Friday afternoon and the Bendigo Spirit on Sunday.
For Perth they kick off the next round against the Spirit in what is sure to be a blockbuster performance that could dictate the minor premiership, before returning home for a Saturday clash against the last-placed Southside Flyers.
