Tigers trounce United as Amos dominates

A 35-POINT performance from young star Wilson Amos has led the Melbourne Tigers to a thrilling 11-point win over Geelong United in Round 13 of the Big V Youth Men’s Championship over the weekend.

It was a match between two sides that have struggled to get on the board for the 2025 season, and coming into the clash, the Tigers had secured just three wins to-date, while United were not much better with five victories to their name.

Following a dominant start to the game at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday night, the Tigers were able to hold on and get the job done on their home deck and record an important win in the context of their season.

The Tigers were roaring in the first quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the match with Amos accounting for eight of those. As expected, United managed to get some points on the board as the term rolled on, but Melbourne seemingly always had an answer, and led by 13 points at the first change as a result of its early work.

The visitors were much better in the second quarter, able to match the Tigers’ offensive output and stay within striking distance on the scoreboard. Although Melbourne led by as much as 16 points, Geelong managed to keep the margin at 13 at the main change, but would need to improve in the second half.

United were able to lift in the third frame, drawing within two points at stages and taking momentum despite being in enemy territory. However, Amos and big man Kai Garnaut nailed some crucial baskets for the Tigers on the eve of three-quarter time, to help the margin sit at seven points with a quarter to play.

Although United tried hard to make one last push in the fourth quarter, and even took the lead in the opening minutes of the frame, the Tigers simply had the class to regain control of proceedings. The margin blew back out to double-digits and Melbourne claimed its fourth win of the season.

Amos was undoubtedly the star of the show, dropping a whopping 35 points on an impressive 15/28 shooting from the field to go with a remarkable seven steals in an excellent two-way performance. Somehow, he left points at the charity stripe, nailing just five of his 12 attempts from the free throw line.

For United, Hugh Buckby was the standout with 15 points on 5/14 shooting from the field, with four of those makes coming from behind the three-point line as he looked to spark Geelong with some much-needed offence.
