Timme’s terrific season earns NBA spot

BIG MAN Drew Timme became another success story for the G League, producing a magnificent campaign with the Long Island Nets and earning a multi-year contract with the team’s NBA affiliate in the Brooklyn Nets.

Timme was outstanding for Long Island throughout the G League season, dominating as a scorer and rebounder and stamping his claim as one of the premier big men in the competition. His efforts did not go unnoticed, and Brooklyn rewarded his form with a deserved contract, as well as being named to the All-NBA G League Second Team.

After going undrafted in 2023 despite a magnificent college career at Gonzaga, where he was named consensus All-American First Team, he joined the G League and had solid stints with the Wisconsin Herd and Stockton Kings before landing with the Nets.

His campaign with Long Island was hard to ignore, although his improvement as the season rolled on was what got him over the line. He started the season as a solid contributor on the offensive end and excellent rebounder, but his efforts in the new year truly showed what he was capable of.

Timme became the fifth player in Nets history to be named G League Player of the Week after an astounding patch of form in late March. Over the span of March 17-23, the forward averaged 35.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 68.4 per cent from the field and 63.6 per cent from behind the arc.

It was a true demonstration of his scoring capabilities, which had not previously been on display to this level. He became the number one scoring option for the Nets, and showcased his ability to stretch the floor, a key trait in the modern game.

He has clearly adapted his skillset for the modern game, and is much more adaptable on the offensive end with a deeper bag than he showed with Gonzaga, which is why he has been able to translate his game to the top level. His time in the G League was just what the doctor ordered, and helped show NBA teams that he was ready for a shot at the top level.

His magnum opus came in an overtime win against the Motor City Cruise during that week, dropping a career-high 50 points to lead his team to victory. Shooting 21/26 from the field and stepping up with 15 points in the fourth quarter to force overtime, it was the breakout performance that earned him an NBA contract.

Since joining the Nets, Timme certainly showed that he belongs at NBA level, looking extremely comfortable and having an immediate impact. Although he played just the nine games, he was still awfully impressive, averaging 12.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 44.1 per cent shooting from the field.

It was evident throughout the first few months of 2025 that Timme was too good for the G League, and his run of form throughout the end of March cemented that. At 24 years of age, and contracted for next season, Timme certainly has the capabilities to be a key player for the future.
