Top three clash headlines sixth round

THE weekend has finally arrived, as has another round of the Big V Women’s Basketball Championship. Round 6 will see a number of big clashes take place around Victoria’s finest courts, and if it is anything like last week’s action, there should be no shortage of entertainment. There will be five games taking place across Saturday and Sunday, with some certain to have a big impact on the standings.

One of the biggest contests of the season to date is the upcoming clash between Wyndham and the Pakenham Warriors. Both sides are currently in the top three with identical records, with the former leading on percentage. Saturday night’s clash will see the two teams face off for second spot on the ladder, in what could be a finals preview down the line.

Wyndham vs Pakenham Warriors
Saturday, April 30 @ 6:30pm
Eagle Stadium

In probably the most anticipated game of the round, the Warriors will travel to Eagle Stadium to take on Wyndham on Saturday night. With both teams looking on track for a finals appearance later in the year, Saturday’s game is set to be crucial in shaping the standings. Bulleen are undefeated and out of reach in Round Six, but a win here would keep the victor in touch with the ladder leaders.

Wyndham appears to have found its groove over the last couple of weeks, reaching triple digits in the points column in its last two outings. Both have come against the struggling Sunbury, but you can only beat the sides in front of you, and the home side appears to be firing on all cylinders. Saturday presents a tougher task given the quality of opponent, but if Lauren Jones can continue her strong run of form (30 points and five steals in her last match), then they will be on their way to another winning score.

The story is remarkably similar for the Warriors, who have been ultra impressive in their last two games. A couple of big wins has seen them well on track to compete for the title, but they will come up against a worthy opponent on Saturday night. While their scoring hasn’t been as impressive as Wyndham’s, the Warriors’ defence has lifted another level in previous weeks, keeping sides to around 60 points per game. If they can halt the offensive momentum of their opponents and take full advantage of the scoring capabilities from players such as Hallie Nickerson, then it will go a long way towards securing the win.

Across the courts

There will be four other games on top of the one mentioned above taking place over the weekend, with an exciting round ahead.

Bulleen vs Southern Peninsula, Saturday @ 8pm, East Doncaster Secondary College
