Weekend wash-up: WNBL – Round 7
SYDNEY Uni’s woes compounded in Round 7 with a massive defeat at the hands of the Lynx, and an injury to star, Alex Wilson. Fellow cellar-dwellers, Dandenong got back on track with a win over Adelaide. The Lightning suffered two losses this round, going down in the dying seconds to the Melbourne Boomers by two points in the last match of the round. It was good news for the Boomers though, as they were able to turn a two-point loss on Friday night into a two-point victory on Sunday.
UC Capitals (72) defeated Melbourne Boomers (70)
Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) fans were treated to a close affair at the National Convention Centre with the UC Capitals triumphing over the Melbourne Boomers by two points. Four points down heading into the final period, it was a defensive rebound followed by two-point jump shot by Kia Nurse with 18 seconds left which won the Capitals the game. It was also only one lost period which put the game on the line for the Capitals, scoring 11 compared to 26 in the second. Melbourne fought well but the Capitals were just the better side on Friday. Kelsey Griffin starred for the Capitals with 16 points, 18 rebounds and two steals. She was unmatched under the ring, tying Melbourne’s best in total rebounds with her offensive rebound stat (six) alone. Nurse also played well with 16 points, five rebounds and one steal, alongside Maddison Rocci, who also scored 16-points with three assists, one steal and one block. For the Boomers, Lindsay Allen starred again with 24 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. She led well but her efforts still were not enough to get the Boomers over the line.
