Wildcats, United kick off NBL semi-finals

AFTER A long wait due to the FIBA break, the 2024/25 National Basketball League (NBL) semi-finals have arrived, with a blockbuster clash between the Perth Wildcats and Melbourne United looming as the perfect way to kick things off.

Two of the competition’s biggest heavyweights will lock horns at John Cain Arena in game one of their best-of-three series tonight, in what is shaping as an affair that could realistically go either way, and will add another chapter in the storied history between the two clubs.

With plenty of star power on both sides, there are matchwinners absolutely everywhere, and expect the big names be the most crucial factor in which side advances to the big dance.

Melbourne United vs. Perth Wildcats (game one)

John Cain Arena

THE TEAMS

United were clinical throughout season 2024/25 once again, and apart from the occasional big loss, were reasonably consistent en route to a second-placed finish. Head coach Dean Vickerman amended for some key off-season losses with yet another coaching masterclass, getting the most out of his roster and ensuring Melbourne was once again a dreaded matchup for opposition sides. Defence will be crucial for United, having won their past five games when holding the opposition to 90 points or less.

Although it was far from smooth sailing at times, the Wildcats managed to book a spot in the play-in, and advanced through to the semi-finals. Despite superstar point guard Bryce Cotton missing a fair chunk of the fixture as a result of cracked ribs, the Wildcats remained steadfast, actually using the opportunity to get touches to other players. Now, Cotton has his strongest supporting cast in years, which will undoubtedly be a key to success for Perth.

LAST TIME THEY MET

United will take some confidence into tonight’s clash given they took home the chocolates the last time these two sides locked horns. Melbourne was six points too good for the Wildcats in Cotton’s 250th NBL game at RAC Arena back in Round 17. In that clash, United forward Jack White was immense with 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead his side to victory.

KEY MATCHUP

It does not get any more box office than a matchup between the MVP and Best Defensive Player, which is what will unfold when Shea Ili takes on Cotton in a must-watch battle. Cotton is putting up career-best figures when it comes to scoring the ball, and has shown an unmatched ceiling that was highlighted by a 59-point performance. However, Ili has had his measure of late, and restricted the superstar to just 14 points in their most recent clash. If he can be as restrictive tonight, it will go a long way to getting United out to a 1-0 series lead. On the other hand, there is no one who matches Cotton’s game-winning ability, so Vickerman and Ili cannot afford for the guard to get off the chain.

PREDICTION

United by four.
