Wildcats win big on the road to stay in touch

BOUNCING back from a disappointing loss earlier in the round, the Perth Wildcats were simply too good for the Brisbane Bullets when the two sides clashed in the National Basketball League (NBL) over the weekend, cruising home to a 24-point win.

The Wildcats came into the clash as favourites, but were also on a two-game losing streak, with their most disappointing defeat coming at the hands of the Sydney Kings, who recorded their biggest ever win at RAC Arena on Friday night. Now, Perth endured a hefty road trip over to Nissan Arena, where a Bullets team that was eager for a win awaited.

It was a terrific response from the Wildcats, who were a class above the home side on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the round, with Perth cruising home to a comfortable victory to get their campaign back on track.

Brisbane Bullets (62) def. by Perth Wildcats (86)

The Bullets were able to pour in the first four points of the match and start in promising fashion, but the Wildcats took control of the match from there. Although it was a slow start for Kristian Doolittle once again, Ben Henshall was able to take over offensively, with eight first-quarter points to see his side lead by as many at quarter time.

The Wildcats continued that momentum in the second frame, with the visitors building their lead and maintaining the scoreboard pressure. The Bullets lacked the scoring punch to keep up with Perth, with their imports quiet and unable to shoulder the load offensively, and as a result, Brisbane trailed by 15 at the main change.

Although the Bullets tried to make some adjustments coming out of half time, the margin only increased in the third quarter. The Wildcats were finding consistent avenues and were gifted some easy scores in transition with Brisbane turning the ball over and looking slow on the offensive end. Perth led by as much as 23 points in the third term and looked in complete control with a quarter to play.

The Bullets did mount a comeback in the final frame, with Jacob Holt leading the way as the margin was cut down to just 14 points. However, that was as close as the home side got, as the Wildcats did enough to push the lead out beyond 20 points and cruise home to a comfortable win on the road.

Henshall led the way in a strong team performance from the Wildcats, with the guard coming off the bench to give a crucial early injection of offence, finishing the contest with 15 points on 6/11 shooting from the field. Import David Duke Jr. was not far behind with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists of his own, while Elijah Pepper (11 points) and Dylan Windler (10 points) both contributed well.

Bullets import Terry Taylor can hold his head high in defeat, continuing to provide an offensive spark despite being up against it on the scoreboard. He finished the contest with 18 points and eight boards on 8/14 shooting from the field.
